The world’s 2,365 billionaires added $4 trillion to their collective wealth

From March 18, 2020, to March 18, 2021, the world’s 2,365 billionaires added US$4 trillion to their collective wealth during the pandemic, according to a new report from the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS). Their combined wealth rose from US$8.04 trillion to US$12.39 trillion – that’s a 54% increase. In comparison, the 2019 GDP of China was $12.23 trillion.

The richest 20 billionaires alone added US$742 billion to their collective wealth during a pandemic – a 68% increase, according to the Institute for Policy Studie report, which analyzes data from Bloomberg, Forbes, and Wealth-X, those billionaire gains have grown. The wealthiest 20 billionaires have a combined $1.83 trillion in wealth. In comparison, the 2019 GDP of Australia was $1.3 trillion.

These 13 billionaires saw their wealth increase over 500 percent.

  2. Tatyana Bakalchuk, Russia
    Wealth increase: 1,200%
    Net worth gain: $12 billion
    Known for: founder e-commerce apparel company, Wildberries.
  3. Zuo Hui, China
    Wealth increase: 714%
    Net worth gain: $15.9 billion
    Known for: Chair of Homelink, China’s largest real estate brokerage company.
  4. Bom Kim, U.S.
    Wealth increase: 670%
    Net worth gain: $6.7 billion
    Known for: Founder of the e-commerce giant Coupang, the Amazon of South Korea.
  5. Dan Gilbert, U.S.
    Wealth increase: 642%
    Net worth gain: $41.7 billion
    Known for: Owner of Quicken Loans.
  6. Cheng Yixiao, China
    Wealth increase: 614%
    Net worth gain: $13.5 billion
    Known for: Co-founder of Kuaishou, a video platform based in Beijing.
  7. Su Hua, China
    Wealth increase: 583%
    Net worth gain: $16.9 billion
    Known for: Co-founder of video platform and live-streaming app, Kuaishu.
  8. Ernest Garcia II, US
    Wealth increase: 567%
    Net worth gain: $13.6 billion
    Known for: Biggest shareholder of Carvana, the online car sales and auto-financing giant.
  9. Elon Musk, US
    Wealth increase: 559%
    Net worth gain: $137.5 billion
    Known for: Tesla, Space-X, and other companies.
  10. Brian Armstrong, US
    Wealth increase: 550%
    Net worth gain: $5.5 billion
    Known for: Chief executive of Coinbase.
  11. Chan Tan Ching-Fen, Hong Kong
    Wealth increase: 540%
    Net worth gain: $8.1 billion
    Known for: Hang Lung Group.
  12. Bobby Murphy, US
    Wealth increase: 531%
    Net worth gain: $10.1 billion
    Known for: Co-founder of Snapchat.
  13. Forrest Li, Singapore
    Wealth increase: 500%
    Net worth gain: $9.5 billion
    Known for: Owner of the online gaming and e-commerce platform, Sea.
