Equipped Enough to Learn

Learning has evolved further through digital literacy that entails assessing, experiencing and disseminating information in a digital world and can be differently utilized depending on disciplines. Hagel (2012) stated that the online mode of education has enhanced and continues to cultivate our understanding on how to effectively and efficiently utilize the digital technologies in the teaching and learning process. Today we are trespassing one of the worst threats in our lifetime to mankind including education. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a global leaning crisis, I am under the belief that many students are not learning the fundamental skills hands-on needed for life.

Education is a basic human right and is necessary for sustainable social and economic development of the nation as a whole. The basic knowledge and skill kit inculcates the positivity of the exercise and a win-win situation for both teachers and students. Every activity encounters barriers that are a part and parcel of every endeavor and education is no different. We have been blessed to have the heritage of gurukul system of education in India with their valuable traditional dissemination methods. There are certain learning aids that could be a problem to many children who do not have a specific place to study, reference books, internet access for studying, a mobile/desktop/laptop at home, or pro-education parents or environment; which others do. Therefore, it is important to think and act towards a common domain of learning interest at students’ level, teachers’ level and also the education institute level as a moral responsibility.

Talking about the positive side, we have the teacher’s digital competence enhanced and personalized when teaching the same group of progressive lot of students on an online mode though. While students encountered barriers like lack of gadget, internet or affordability, teachers with the objective to dish out to the last student geared up so constructively overnight and devised ways and means to see students don’t face the impact adversely.

The academic freedom of the teachers could be showcased at its best during these unprecedented testing times, when the teachers planned a culmination of the a few methods listed below to deliver their content to the students population.

  • Learning in small digestible chunks that has enhanced planning
  • Adaptive online learning that has enhanced communication
  • Self –Learning reinforced at students’ level that has enhanced preparedness and recognition

Talking about the traditional education system and definitely the classroom benches, chalks and especially the teacher mentors, will continue to be the role models and inspirers for our lifetime. Just the next gradual step is the online teaching methodology with its own set of challenges which every endeavor encompasses. It has its set of pros and cons. While it adapts to time management that is flexible with reminders that can ease the students’ and teachers’ learning, there can have technological and network issues and inattentive blindness.

Few tips for the students that may help them to plan their literary schedule are listed below

  • Pre-module content / referral books and projects
  • Digital representations of topics especially practical sessions
  • A strong colleagues’ relationship under a great administrator where we propose and exchange ideas to discuss what best can be done,

When the learning facilitators are busy in this time of adaptive adoption and adventurous experimentation in providing the online enabled learning, I would like to agree with many in employing the blended learning through flipped classroom and both, self- directed and project based learning. This is to develop the faculties and students’ attitudes about the quality of technology-enabled learning, proactive human behavior and facilitate the sharing of expertise to a greater target audience in different geographic locations.
