How To Choose A Job That Is Best For You – 6 Ways To Simplify The Process

To find out what you want to do for a living you have to put yourself into a difficult process. Making the wrong choice will eventually lead to a changing profession and losing time. The older you are when you decide to change career the more difficulties you will face along the way. Your job is something that ideally will be so inspiring for you that you will want to do it for the rest of your life. There will always be options available and if you are not determining what you want you will end up following another person’s destiny.

Here are some ideas on how to pick your career and not let it pick you.

  1. Work out your criteria
    It is vital to know what you want. Analyzing the criteria you have on your searching will shed light on your decision. That is right! Not everybody wants the same things from their job. What may be the point for you when going to your job may work as a source of pressure for another colleague. If we were all the same, we would all be doing the same job. To simplify the process make a list of 7 criteria that are important for you and do some brainstorming to see which jobs meet most of your goals. If none of the jobs you thought of satisfies at least four out of your seven criteria keep on searching. Let your mind free and don’t settle for anything less than following your desire.
  2. Evaluate your skills and talents
    Apart from knowing what you want, you have to know who you are. You may be good at things you don’t like and you may not be as good at the thing you love to do. Your purpose will be to find a balance between those to start things rolling. Taking a test or addressing specials to help you evaluate your skills is not a bad idea. Especially for those who are already following a successful career, it is good to check out with a specialist what suits you best before leaving something that may be going awesome. The process will help you in other ways as well. You may find the chance to improve some of your skills keeping in mind that they will be useful for your future career.
  3. Think of the previous experience
    Career tests may work for some people but the majority don’t seem to be completely satisfied. Look back in the past to understand yourself. Have you done any other jobs that you enjoyed? What part of the process did you enjoy the most? In case you are in a career that you want to quit, think deeply of the reasons for this decision. Perhaps it is not the job itself that is inappropriate, but other things in the mixture of the working environment. If for example, you have a boss that you don’t get along with you can search for a different company but not for a whole different profession. Evaluating our past experiences is maybe the best guide to help us understand what we want and where we feel comfortable.
  4. Prepare a fake CV
    It may sound silly, but you will only do it to help yourself understand what your ideal you would be. It is a catchy idea but it can work wonderfully. Think about yourself as another person. When a manager checks out your resume what will they find? This will help you determine what you are expected to be. Show this CV to a friend and let them guess what job this resume is sent for?
  5. Do your own research
    When you come up with a list of the jobs you would like to do go in the google search and check out the job description for these jobs. What you have in mind may be a lot different from the tasks required for that job. Don’t rely completely on others. Listen to people’s advice, but don’t always follow them. Besides, in case you make any mistakes on this, they’d better be your mistakes and not someone else’s.
  6. Be open to possibilities
    The reason you ended up doing something you didn’t want is probably that you didn’t think you had enough options. It is very common to feel trapped when you are about to do something new; the famous fear of change. However, we live in the world of opportunities. If you don’t believe you can find something exciting for you to do, don’t expect it to appear from anywhere.
