Things You Might Not Know About Marc Jacobs

American fashion designer Marc Jacobs

Continuing with the tradition of listing things you may or may not know about some of the most influential designers, I have picked Marc Jacobs for this article. He is an American fashion powerhouse whose clientele is rich, classy, and jaw-dropping. His talents became palpable when he was young and he invested all his energy and resources into honing them. Today, he is known as one of the highly acclaimed fashion designers in the world.  He has more than 200 stores in as many as 60 countries in the world, and his business is only expanding as we speak. But, Marc is a universe in himself.

I wouldn’t take much of your time here and will jump straight to the point. We are going to talk about Marc, obviously, and we are going to talk about things you might not know about him. So, stay with me and you will know a great many things you should know about this man.

Here are 6 of those things:

  1. Support from Grandma
Marc started exhibiting signs of creative intellect from an early age. This was not left unnoticed by his grandmother who was largely responsible for encouraging him to hone his skills. It was under her guidance, Marc learned how to knit. She always inspired Marc to engage in self-exploration; explore and experiment with ideas and implement them in his creations.

  2. His own struggle with drugs and alcohol
Marc’s life went upside down when he took a job at Louis Vuitton. In the year 1997, Marc was appointed as the creative director of the brand, and this produced a lot of pressure on him. Difficulty in coping with rising expectations and work pressure caused him to engage in excessive alcohol and drugs as a result of which he had to undergo rehabilitation in 1999. However, his struggle did not end there. In the year 2007, he was back to his unhealthy ways and checked into rehab again. Despite the entire struggle, he succeeded and managed to get out of these problems. He eventually left Louis Vuitton and launched his own brand, which is now a mega-hit.

  3. An Award-Winning Designer
There is no gainsaying that he is a remarkable fashion designer. Throughout his career as a designer, he has been acknowledged by many esteemed magazines and awarded at many shows. He has been the recipient of multiple awards given by the Council of Fashion Designers of America: Accessory Designer of the Year in 1999, Womenswear Designer of the year in 1997, MTV VMA Fashion Trailblazer Award in 2019, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, and Womenswear Designer of the year in 2016.
  4. Education
Marc Jacobs made it to one of the most prestigious fashion schools in the world, Parsons School of Design. Over there, he continued developing and acquiring skills. His consistency and hard work ultimately bore results as he went on to win many awards such as the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award, Design Student of the year, and Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award. However, it was in the year 1987 when he attracted unprecedented limelight for a man of his age. In that year, he won the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent, making him the youngest designer to win that award.

  5. His Favourite Designer
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to you when I mention the name of the designer who inspires Marc Jacobs: Ralph Lauren.

    American fashion designer Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren is the fashion designer who with his unique vision has transformed the global fashion landscape for good. His ideas and creations manifesting those ideas have inspired Marc. Well, there is not much to elaborate on the ‘why’ here because Ralph Lauren is too good. What would the fashion industry be without Ralph, I wonder?

  6. Not connected with his family anymore
Marc Jacobs has been very open about his relationship with his family. He has stated out clearly that he disliked the idea of attending to relationships out of compulsion. In an interview, he noted that he was probably the most detached person from his family in his social circle. Moreover, this detachment does not really affect him and he hardly ponders over it.
