Best Colleges and Universities in Guyana, 2021

Discover the top Colleges and Universities in Guyana ranked by the 2021 CEOWORLD magazine University Ranking. Formally called the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Guyana is a South American country with a strong association with Caribbean countries. Known to be home to one of the most heterogeneous cultures in the continent, its population comprises Portuguese, Europeans, Chinese, Indian, and African among many others. It is not a well-developed economy, however, it has embarked on a journey to do away with that fact and catch up with its South American counterparts.

Many critics believe that the Guyanese education system needs an overhaul because it lacks expertise in many disciplines. To bridge the glaring gap, its universities have tried to work on their academic and research framework and have received moderate achievements. Surely, with time, they will improve in leaps and bounds and become some of the best in the region provided these efforts are continuous.

There are 5 universities which make up for the elite Guyana higher education. Enrolment to courses provided in any of these assures a bright future. We are going to take a look at these today.  Find out all about Guyana’s best universities, and explore their CEOWORLD magazine university ranking performance.

  1. University of Guyana
The premier educational institution in the country, the University of Guyana comes at the top in terms of academic developments. It was founded in the year 1963 and started courses limited to the field of Arts, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. However, today, there are as many as 60 programmes that are offered here and include Law, Economics, Optometry, Forestry, Engineering, and Education. There are also programmes for Distance and Continuing Education. Being an institution of national importance, it has produced many influential alumni such as Horace B. Davis, Richard Hart, Rupert Roopnaraine, Ali Mazrui, and Lancelot Hogben.
  2. Texila American University
For Guyanese, Texila American University is the place to go to for acquiring top-notch education in medical science. It is an offshore private university founded by the Texila American University Ltd-Hong Kong. Its academic organization has been structured in multiple levels each of which offers a number of courses in medicine, public health, nursing, and allied sciences. The university has been duly recognized by the National Accreditation Council of Guayana, the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory, and the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  3. Lincoln American Universit
Another prestigious Medical School, Lincoln American University is a private educational institution established in the year 2016. Very much like Texila American University, it has received recognition in and outside Guyana: it is registered with authorities such as Medical Council of Canada, National Accreditation Council of Guyana, Association for Medical Education in Europe, World Directory of Medical Schools, and Global Alliance Medical Education. Presently, the university offers a range of medical programs which are largely based on the United States of America’s Medical Curriculum.  Courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are available as part of its academic framework.
  4. GreenHeart Medical University
Situated in the historic heart of Guyana, Georgetown, GreenHeart Medical University promises high-quality academic instructions and research guidance to anyone who needs them. It was only founded in the year 2005 but has managed to climb up the ranks as one of the finest medical schools in the country. It has been duly accredited by reputed authorities. In order to impart practical knowledge to its students, it has entered into associations with many hospitals across the globe. Due to these partnerships, foreign professionals often visit university time and again. Courses here include those in Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.  One of the key advantages of this university is its affordable tuition fee that allows students to enroll without much difficulty.
  5. Guyana School of Agriculture
Anyone who has a strong disposition towards Agrarian studies should know that the Guyana School of Agriculture is quite a name. It was founded in the year 1963 and has ever since then been among the top class institutions in the country. Over here, students are offered a Diploma in Agriculture and many certified Agriculture programmes.
