Tips for Being a Successful Fashion Stylist

A fashion stylist is what you need if you want to dress right. It is the job of a stylist to decide what you wear and how you wear fashion. Stylists usually work alongside fashion designers, makeup artists, and photographers and are generally hired by members of high-profile societies such as movie stars. For many celebrities, their stylists are integral for establishing and maintaining a positive public image. Hence, a stylist must not be taken lightly.

There is a common misconception that fashion stylists have nothing much to do—a groundless assumption made by people who do not appreciate what it takes to choose the right fashion for the right person for the right occasion. In order to work as a stylist, there is a world of things that must be understood. Anyone who wants to become a stylist must know that it takes a lot to become one, and a lot more to become a good one. Let us read a little about some of the things which make a good stylist.

You will grow with fashion

Fashion is ever-changing. It is changing while I am writing this blog. What is trendy today may not be trendy tomorrow. Fashion from the distant past might resurface and become the most popular option. There is no way to predict the trajectory of fashion; we can, however, grow with it. It, therefore, becomes important that you keep a tab on what’s new and old in the industry. Read all major fashion magazines, connect with fashion influencers, seek opinions from your team members, and do not be afraid of experimentation.

 Know your client

Whoever you are styling is your subject. You must study her: her physical attributes, personalities, speech pattern, likes and dislikes, and budget among many other things. Fashion is not just about clothes and accessories; it is also about who is going to wear them. It is, therefore, suggested that you interview your client to know her better. Ask her what kind of image she wants to maintain, what she is most comfortable in, how much time she can give to dressing up, what she expects from you, etc. Your job is to make decisions on someone else’s behalf—and you must do it right.

Networking Skills Will Take You A Long Way

Survival in the fashion industry is challenging but the process can be eased through excellent networking. The entire industry works on socialization and networking. One person would refer the other and so on, and this way people will come to know you. Of course, your work will speak for your talent but you must reach out to more and more people so that it gets due recognition. So, attend parties, connect with designers (big and small) and industry professionals, and organize events for the public and industry professionals to attend. Keep sharing your works on social media platforms. But, make sure you are consistent.

Invest in gaining experience

You may have a degree from a top tier fashion school but that degree would not help for long unless you invest your energy into gaining experience. Working a stylist means you will meet different kinds of clients and work on different types of projects. This means you are expected to step up your contribution every time you take up any client or project. To sharpen your skills and enhance your knowledge, you must work with as many clients and projects as you can. Or, you may want to invest a good amount of time in one project or with one client (where you are a stylist to a celebrity) so that you adjust to the changing needs of fashion with every requirement of your client. The more you gain, the more you would get referrals. People put a lot of stock in your past experiences, and hence, you must direct your focus on gaining good work experiences.

Never Hesitate

A key feature of a successful stylist is that he knows when to say ‘no’. It is often told to newcomers in the industry to prioritize the client and do what he wants you do to. While this is generally good advice, it is not always the right thing to do. You are a stylist: your job is to ensure that your client looks the best. Your client might want you to do things differently but you could have different opinions. Express them to him. Tell him that there is a better alternative to what he has suggested. Do not hesitate about what you think is the better choice. If things go wrong, people will put blame on you because you were entrusted with the task to make decisions for someone else. You are expected to know what is right for your client. So, speak your mind when you think that is necessary.
