Top 10 World’s Most Pedestrian Friendly Cities for 2020

Some people like strolling along the streets of a city instead of driving. If you are one of these people, you may be interested to know which cities around the world named the world’s best walking cities for 2020.

  1. Vienna: First of all the place that is very easy to walk in Vienna is its center. There is one main ring road that captures the city center making it hard to get lost. One very easy walk is starting from Gumpoldskirchen train station, walk up Wiener Straße, past the church on Kirchenplatz, onto Weinlehrpfad and continue the direction of the trail. Another option is to catch the tram 49 to the stop Bahnhofstraße and walk-up Dehnegasse following the trail. Vienna scored 45 out of 60 on the walkability scale in this study and gained first place.
  2. Lisbon: Although the Portuguese capital is called the «city of the seven hills», walking can be one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the city. The most known walking trail in Lisbon takes the visitors to the Belém from Cais do Sodré on a marked path, decorated with excerpts of a Fernando Pessoa poem along the way. Also, a tour of Alfama is considered to be a must. Lisbon scored 44.55 and took second place on the list.
  3. New York City: New York City took third place in the list of the world’s best walking cities for 2020. New York City scored 41.75 out of 60 on the walkability scale, with 1000 walking trails. So, wouldn’t it be a good idea to explore New York City on foot?
  4. Tokyo: Tokyo took fourth place scoring 41.70 out of 60 on the walkability scale. If you like walking a good option is to walk around the perimeter of Tokyo Imperial Palace. It is about ten kilometers walking distance. Another option is to walk at Ueno park which is like walking at New York’s City central park. You will find there multiple museums and a zoo.
  5. Beijing: Beijing comes fifth on the list. The capital of the People’s Republic of China scored 41.55 out of 60 on the walkability scale. The main points offered for walking either for relaxing or in order to explore the city are the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, Yuanmingyuan and the Legation Quarter.
  6. Seoul: Seoul comes at sixth place on the list, scoring 41.50 out of 60 on the walkability scale. If you follow the Sunseong-gil Path, you will have the chance to walk around the castles of Hanyang that surround the city and reflect all the history of Seoul. Along this walk, the visitors can focus on Sungnyemun Gate, Heunginjimun Gate, Sukjeongmun Gate, and the Donuimun Gate. Another option for a pleasant walk is the Naksan Trail and Heunginjimun Trail. They are connected to the Dongdaemun Fashion Street and Daehangno.
  7. Madrid: Madrid comes at place seven of the list. The capital of Spain scored 39.50 out of 60 on the walkability scale. Starting from Puerta del Sol (The Gate of the Sun), you can continue to Calle Mayor, where at number 48 is the Cervantes House Museum, and end your walk at Playa Mayor (known originally as Plaza del Arrabal, was built during the Habsburg rule).
  8. Prague: Prague took eight places scoring 41.70 out of 60 on the walkability scale. Vrtba Garden is the perfect position to begin exploring Prague. Also offers magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. From there you can go to St Nicholas Church and then begin your upwards climb towards Prague Castle.
  9. London: London took nine places scoring 37.90 out of 60 on the walkability scale. If you choose for your walk the Jubilee Greenway keep in mind that connects London’s major Olympic sites and passes by some of the city’s key attractions, including Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, and Shakespeare’s Globe theatre. The Greenway is divided into 10 sections, perhaps the most popular of which is the 2.3-mile Little Venice to Camden portion. Another option is the Lea Valley, known as a walking hotspot.
  10. Paris: Paris took ten place scoring 37.75 out of 60 on the walkability scale. Paris is a city made for walking. You can choose Il de la Cite for wonderful walks or Seine’s Left Bank. Lastly, you can visit Montmartre and take small walks while enjoying interesting views.
