5 Tips For Students Planning to Study in New York City

New York, or affably called the Big Apple, is the city of dreams. It is a city where everything and anything is possible. It is the life of the United States and is known for its carefree, high-class, and fast-moving lifestyle. People come here for all kinds of reasons, but they never leave it without the baggage of memories. New York is not just about its touristic appeal; there are so many different things one can experience here. Many young people come to this city hoping to gain academic excellence and establish a thriving career for themselves. But, coming to New York means you are agreeing to a great deal of experiences—and you should prepare yourself mentally for the same.

Times Square, New York City, New York

If you are one of those who may be heading to New York for pursuing higher education, then I would like you to pay attention here. To sail through the ups and downs of this bizarrely beautiful place, you must know a few things that can ease out the process. Here are 5 tips which could be of some use to you.

  1. It is busy as hell
New York is one of the busiest cities in the world. Getting through the city’s traffic can become a hectic exercise so you must resort to the best option available—Subway. Subway is the lifeline of the locals, and it is especially important if you want to reach your college or workplace on time. It is, therefore, advised that you must learn to navigate through the metro network as soon as you can. Spend money on a MetroCard to make your life easier while using the subway.
  2. Moody Weather
Yes, New York City is a moody place. It can be anything at any time. But, sometimes it can become problematic. This is especially true for its weather. You can never guess when the weather will change. ALWAYS CHECK THE WEATHER. In colder months, you may think that you are adequately dressed but you could be wrong. Always be prepared for sudden changes in the weather so always wear an extra layer to be on the safer side.
  3. Universities to consider
You must take a look at some of the universities and colleges in the city for the application process. There are many top-ranked institutions here such as the New School, Cornell University, Columbia University, New York University, Yeshiva University, and Stevens Institute of Technology. Note that Cornell University, Columbia University, and New York University are currently ranked among the top 50 in the world. Considering their reputation, they are very picky about students and thus, have a highly competitive acceptance rate. So, if you are aiming for the top, then you will have to seriously work on your resume.
  4. Food Expenses and Rent
Without food, no one can survive. You will have to fend for yourself wherever you go. New York City may end up being a challenge because it is among the most expensive cities in the world. A recent study showed that you might end up almost $500 per month on groceries. If you decide to dine out regularly, then expect your expenses to rise like crazy. Much of the added value to the price is due to the whopping amount of rent that these food outlets have to pay.
This brings us to accommodation. You have to prepare yourself mentally because the crazy cost of living is nearly unbelievable. The average rent for a 2 BHK apartment should cost you between $2,500 and $3,000. Even one BHK apartments are expensive to rent. You may prefer to stay in dorms, which was relatively less expensive; but if you want privacy, then you must tailor your budget accordingly.
  5. Consult a resident
You can read several articles about New York City and how to support yourself here. But, nothing is better than hearing suggestions and seeking assistance from a local. All universities and college in the city-run student support forums which you can contact to get in touch with a local student. He could be of great use to you as he will surely know the way around to save money in the city. Thus, before moving here, make sure you had had enough research done and plenty of consultations arranged.
