5 Interesting facts about skirts you should know

Skirts? Skirts are lovely. They are a marvelous piece of creation that goes well with almost every top-wear to have ever existed. They have been here with us for so long that there are too many of them to choose from. With time, they have evolved into various types that are suitable for various occasions. But, have you ever wondered about what their history is, what kinds of them existed in earlier centuries, how they evolved and became so popular, and whatnot? Well, whether or not you have, this article will surely educate you about them nevertheless.

Give me a few minutes of your quarantined life and know the world of skirts. Skirts have a remarkable history and facts of their own, and you should know about them. This is, especially, useful to those of my readers who are fashion enthusiasts. Knowing the ‘whys’ are as much important as knowing the ‘hows’. So, with this note, let us take a look at 5 interesting facts about skirts.

  1. Not Just for Women
Yes, we have, for ages, associated skirts with women fashion. Well, I do not blame people for that, but they should know that historically there have been cultures where men used to (and still do) wear skirts. Think about it for a second and perhaps, you might come up with an example. In case you have, good! In case you haven’t, let me give you one.
Scottish people are known for their traditional garment called kilts which are essentially skirts. Presently, it is common to find knee-length, pleated skirts all over the world, and these skirts have drawn their inspiration from these Gaelic men’s kilts. Today, it is also not uncommon to find fashion designers making skirts for men such as Marc Jacobs.
  2. Goes back as far as 3900 BC
If you thought skirts are a thing of a recent past, then you could not be more wrong. The oldest skirt to have been ever recorded comes from 3900 BC. The skirt was made out of straw and was found in a cave in Armenia. It was a women’s skirt, and the archaeologists noted that the garment had been well-preserved and was creatively designed. So, when somebody tells you skirts are quite modern, tell them about this fact.
  3. For a smoother ride
Originally, skirts had longer hemline and generally covered much part of the bottom. However, with time, fashion changed so did people’s perception of short-length skirts. It was, however, the explosion of the automobile industry that effectuated a change in the styling of skirts. The otherwise long skirts were difficult to carry when on a bike and sometimes, even in cars. This necessitated a change in the length of the hemlines and shorter skirts eventually were in vogue. Of course, other events also inspired designers to come out with shorter skirts such as the rising clout of the entertainment industry.

  4. Occasion-depended
The hemlines of skirts have always been a controversial issue in the context of “what is appropriate and what is not”. However, today, as we all know it, orthodoxy will continue to breed and we should not be wasting our time over it. Instead, we must explore all kinds of skirts available in the market. Most of the skirts are occasion-depended. You can wear a knee-length skirt to work or a very short skirt for a night club. If you are attending a Japanese festival, you may want to wear a Kimono dress, which is technically very close to a skirt. But, in case all you want to do is stay at home and do nothing, there should be a skirt for you too. Technological advancements have made it easier for us to find breathable clothes, and skirts are presently among the most body-friendly garments to exist.
  5. The fabric.
Today, skirts can be found to be made of all kinds of fabric. My favorite is a denim skirt; it goes with nearly every occasion and gives you a very comfortable yet smart look. But, you can find skirts made of cotton, poplin, rayon, wool, and crepe de chine. Note that even fabric decides what kind of skirt you should be wearing to a place or occasion. For example, it is a big NO to wear a denim skirt to the office.
