Canada’s Super Rich Lost $5.73 billion in One Day

Canada’s 12 richest collectively lost $5.73 billion on Thursday, March 12, 2020, based on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The index currently contains the 500 richest people in the world, including 24 Canadians.

The list included Canada’s richest man Joseph Tsai, the billionaire co-founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba, who lost $625 million in the wake of the 9 March stock collapse. Even so, he retains leadership among Canadian billionaires with a fortune of $10.9 billion.

Canada’s second-richest Sherry Brydson, an heiress to the Thomson fortune, lost $765 million, while the fortune of Canadian billionaires Galen Weston and David Thomson shrank by $870 million and $463 million, respectively.

One of the people for who this has been a devastating week was JK Irving. The mega-billionaire lost $108 million on Thursday. While Taylor Thomson experienced a $436 million decline to $$5.23 billion. His year-to-date loss increased to $882 million.

The total net worth of Peter Thomson plunged by $461 million on Thursday to $5.20 billion. Jim Pattison’s total net worth also took a hit to $4.46 billion, down by $545 million.
