John Goullet Highlights the Current Most Popular Tech Jobs

Tech jobs are arguably the most in-demand jobs currently in the market. Companies far and wide are looking for software engineers, programmers, and developers. If you’re qualified, there are plenty of large to mid-sized businesses looking for your skillset in tech. Knowing what you bring to the table can help you minimize your search for businesses in need of your skillset.

John Goullet, chairman of Diversant LLC, started his career as a tech consultant before transitioning to IT staffing a few decades ago. Because he has helped thousands of job hopefuls find gainful employment at Fortune 500 and mid-level companies, John Goullet understands what companies are looking for when it comes to hiring top talent. Here are a few of John Goullet’s highlights of the most popular tech jobs right now and what you need to know to stand out from your peers.

What skills do you need to land a job in tech?

Data Scientist

With technology constantly evolving, companies are desperately in need of data scientists. The most common and sought-after data science programming languages are Python and R. Data scientists should be familiar with using tools specifically designed for analyzing big data sets. Hadoop and Spark are two such popular tools and may be required by companies in need of data scientists. Having a clear understanding of programming languages and big data tools is only one aspect of being a proficient data scientist; you should also be familiar with machine learning and deep learning.

DevOps Engineer

A DevOps engineer is a multi-faceted position. DevOps engineers specialize in automating and streamlining existing systems and processes, as well as building and maintaining tools for monitoring systems, deployment, and operations. DevOps engineers are regularly called on to diagnose and resolve issues in testing, development, and production environments. As a DevOps engineer, you should have a solid grasp of many of the most popular scripting languages, including Ant, Python, Gradle, and Ruby. It could also help you stand out as a top contender if you have experience with cloud-based infrastructure environments.

Data Analysts

Data analysts bring a host of skillsets to the table. Their typical duties include developing frameworks for strategy development, analytics, and data and implementing data-analysis tools. They are also required to collect and analyze data sets to help inform business decisions. It should be noted that data analysts who excel at problem solving tend to stand out when interviewing for top tech companies.

Software Engineers

If you’re a software engineer (or if you plan to become one), you’re in luck. 4.8 percent of all tech positions currently available require your services. While the skillsets of software engineers are heavily in demand, there are still strict guidelines that must be met during the hiring process at top tech companies. Software engineers should be proficient in at least one – if not several – of the most popular programming languages. These include Python, C++, C#, C, and Java. Each company has its own needs and requirements. Therefore, you should pay attention to the requirements of each software engineer position that you apply for.

Solutions Architect

The position of solutions architect isn’t quite as well known as other tech positions, but it’s just as important, if not more so. Solutions architects manage complex processes and resolve business problems with technology. Typical duties include defining phases, features, and solution requirements to address potential issues, as well as determining the best tech-based solutions. Solutions architects should be highly skilled in cloud development and IT infrastructure. They should also be proficient in engineering and software architectural design.

Front-End Developer

Front-end developers are in high demand because of their ability to put a professional polish on website design. They also ensure that the website is in good working order when it comes to functionality. If you’re in the market as a front-end developer, you’ll need to know the most basic website programming languages, including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. Having knowledge of web frameworks will also make you more marketable; angular and React.js will make you a standout pick.

Systems Engineer

Systems engineering is a happy marriage of engineering and coding, allowing for the implementation of computer systems for businesses and organizations. Many companies require systems engineers to have skillsets that include mathematics, communication, system design, and analysis. Systems engineers correct software errors in new and existing systems while also evaluating performance. Further responsibilities include maintaining inventory, preparing progress and specifications reports, and overseeing payroll. Systems engineers should have expertise in network hardware and operating systems and possess strong communication skills. They should also have ample experience with troubleshooting and fixing networks and systems. It also helps to have a computer science (or computer-related) degree.

Security Engineer

With cybercrimes on the rise, security engineers are in high demand. As the name implies, security engineers protect computer networks and systems. Their primary duty involves monitoring the network to which they’re assigned and protecting systems and sensitive data from cyberattacks and infiltration. At the bare minimum, a security engineer should be proficient with computer forensic tools. They should also be well versed in disaster recovery and have the ability to understand malicious code when they see it. Security engineers should also have ample experience with antivirus software, firewalls, content filtering, and intrusion detection.

Full-Stack Developer

In the tech world, full-stack developers do it all. Not only do they have the same skillset as software engineers, meaning they’re skilled at writing source code, but they’re also good at performing data analysis, writing tests, deploying web applications, and querying databases. As a full-stack developer, you never know what the day has in store for you. If you want to differentiate yourself from the rest of the pack, you should have a firm understanding of JavaScript, SQL, Java, and a host of relevant web development tools.
