Top 5 Ways To Increase Focus For Students

Maintaining focus during studying can be hard as our young minds tend to wander endlessly. College can turn out to be very stressful for many and with so many activities and tasks to take part in, one might not be able to focus on their studies as much as they want to. All the distractions might take a toll on your concentration and focusing abilities. The following are the top 5 ways that will help you in increasing and maintaining your focus on studies.

  1. Meditate
Studies have shown that meditating regularly can reduce your stress level and alter your brain matter, leading to improved decision making and a healthier mind. Meditating regularly can increase your focusing ability by multiple times. It puts the brain at peace which allows the brain to focus on the task at hand. Even if you meditate for five minutes before your study session, you can see a clear improvement in your concentration level. Meditation will not just help you study better but will also make you calm and peaceful from within.
  2. Take short breaks
Studying for long hours at a stretch can hamper your brain’s ability to focus. To avoid this from happening, one should take short breaks in between their study sessions, giving a quick reboot to the brain. There are a lot of things that you can do while your break lasts, like taking a walk or listening to your favourite song. Prolonged working or studying hours can send the brain into a sort of shutdown which prevents information from being stored properly, so make sure to always take short breaks to increase your focus.
  3. Play soothing background music
Playing soothing tunes or music in the background may also help you in focusing better. Some people like listening to music while attempting to study as it makes their concentration stronger. Choose a soft tune to listen to as this will ensure that your brain is calm even while working. Music works wonders on most people and can also act as a therapy instrument. It will also make you less anxious and help you release stress. It is found that it is easy to learn lyrics because they are in a pattern, so if you study while listening to your favourite song, it will help you memorize more material as your brain will now associate the study matter with the beats of the song.
  4. Eliminate distractions
Eliminate any distractions that might hamper your focus. Put aside your phone or any other electronic item that will not be used in the study session. If listening to music doesn’t work for you, then switch off any music playing devices in your room. Make sure you clean your study desk and that there is nothing on it except for your study material, as decluttering can boost focus. Try to avoid any stray thoughts and concentrate only on the task at hand. When you eliminate distractions, the brain gets nothing else to focus on except the work that you’re doing, resulting in increased focus.
  5. Find or create an appropriate study environment
For creating or finding the most suited study environment, you need to first find out what environment you are most focused in. Try experimenting in different settings and choose the one that suits you the most. It might be a peaceful and quiet room, away from all the noise, or it might be a place bustling with people, creating a white noise that might help you focus. After you find what suits you the most, try and re-create the same setting. If you can focus better in a quiet environment, then shut all doors and windows, remove all electronic gadgets, and study alone. If you prefer white noise, then study in a crowded place like a café or a park or get your music playing. If group study helps you focus, then create a study group and work with them. Once you find your most favorable setting and start studying in it, you would be able to focus better.

Studying can be hard but it doesn’t have to be made a drag. If a person is determined and implement some of the techniques mentioned above, they can easily increase their focus and excel in their academics.
