If you are a seasoned business traveler, or even a new one, you know how expensive traveling can get. With so many places to tick off of your travel bucket list, you would think that you need to own a bunch of cash to achieve all of those travel goals.
Well, fret not! Reading what follows, you would understand that it is less about owning a lot of money and more about sorting your priorities, making smart choices, and well, being strategic!
- Travel during off season
Rarely does any traveler think about this one simplest way of saving money. Statistics show that the number of tourists in most of the given destination is only a fraction higher in peak season than in the off season. Other than that, it’s mostly just a marketing gimmick! Of course, this doesn’t mean you start off for Mt. Everest in mid-December!There are a lot of exceptions to this that mostly include treks and famous beaches. Rest assured, going off-season will definitely get you cheaper plane tickets and the hotel prices will be lower. - Make use of free days
A lot of famous museums and monuments designate a day or two in the week when the entry is either free, or at a discounted rate. Just look up the websites of the tourist attractions you are planning to visit and see if there are any discounted days or hours of the day. If you do a little research, you will find that there are often a lot of free activities going on in an area. Don’t miss them!These museums are usually surrounded with shops full of souvenirs. Our advice is to not buy a souvenir as soon as your eyes are laid on it. Reserve the last day of your travel for shopping and souvenirs, so that you’ve already been in enough shops throughout your stay to compare prices. - Rent an apartment instead of a hotel
When traveling with a group of friends or family, it is far cheaper to stay in an apartment rather than having separate hotel rooms. These apartments usually come with a refrigerator and a kitchen area. Our advice is to use them! Ordering food can be very expensive, and not even worth it if the place you’ve traveled to is not famous for its food. Shop from local markets, and prepare your own meals.
It also helps if this rented apartment is on the outskirts of the city, at least not in the commercial area. You’ll be surprised at the difference in price between an apartment near the famous tourist attraction and one 4 miles away from it. You can always visit the attractions throughout the day and head back at night.
If you are a group of young people looking for the cheapest deals available, you can even stay in hostels. - Talk to Locals!
Locals will tell you the ins and outs of how they save money every day. Other than that, you can count on locals to tell you the best local food and where you can find the cheapest of it, and what is the best time to visit certain places.
Talk to locals, and even travel like them! Use public transport whenever possible. And when public transport isn’t possible, hitchhike! This is also one of the best ways to make friends in the new places you visit. - Save money on food and water
A lot of seasoned travelers suggest you to carry food for both the plane and the trip. Have at least one meal made out of readymade groceries (breakfast is usually the most convenient). Hummus and bread, crackers and butter, you name it. And if you really love coffee, consider carrying your coffee maker too. Coffee can be expensive, and you might need double your daily intake considering how tiring travel can be.
As far as water is concerned, stay as far away from packaged water as possible. Instead, carry a refillable water bottle with you. You’ll be surprised by how many places you can get a free refill.
There are innumerable other ways of saving money while traveling – couch-surfing, using student discounts/family discounts, do your own laundry, the list goes on! The trick is to be smart and make the right choices.
