RANKED: The Happiest (And Unhappiest) Countries On Earth, 2019

Finland was just named the world’s happiest country for the second year in a row, according to the World Happiness Report. While the Nordic countries of Finland (No. 1), Denmark (No. 2), Norway (No. 3), and Iceland (No. 4) topped the table, there was no sign of the United States in the top ten.

The Netherlands came in 5th place, followed by Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada (the only country in the Americas) and Austria. The United States placed 19th, four below the Brexit-divided United Kingdom and four above Mexico.

Interestingly, economic superpowers are not super happy.

No other economic superpowers made it into the top 10 rankings, either. The United Kingdom came in 15th place, while Germany came in 17th place. The United States came in 19th place, France came in 24th place, Italy came in 36th place, Japan came in 58th place, Russia came in 68th place, China came in 93rd place, and India came in 140th place. To be the happiest country, having the top economic growth isn’t necessarily the answer.

People in South Sudan are the most unhappy with their lives, followed by the Central African Republic (155), Afghanistan (154), Tanzania (153) and Rwanda (152). The report ranks countries on six elements: freedom, generosity, healthy life expectancy, GDP per capita, social support and absence of corruption. Australia dropped one spot to 11th place.

These are the happiest (and unhappiest) countries on earth, 2019:
