Products like the iPhone are sticky because they look so neat and cool, and the appearance is also an inherent aspect of how the device is used. Simple design begets simple functionality, and this has never been more appreciated in the corporate world than it is today.

The fact is, talking about good design and understanding good design are two wildly different things. Furthermore, understanding good design and actually accomplishing good design are also not equivalent. If you don’t currently appreciate the need for good design in your company, it’s time to do some research and have a long hard think about it. Use Good DIY Practices. Let’s face it, not all of us have huge marketing budgets. This doesn’t mean, though, that we can’t make things that look good. Take the time to understand exactly what your design needs to do, and the branding elements like color and form which need to be embodied in it. Having this clear in your mind will make life easier for your designers and, in turn, for you.

Whether your designers are in-house or in an independent design firm, it’s important to make sure that your budget is consistent with the quality you hope your designers to provide. You’re very unlikely to get something great if you pay second rate fees, so make sure that the financial powers that be understand the priority. Design is your corporate brand’s face to the world. If it’s less than stellar, people will innately understand your so is your company.
Design is integral to the way products and services function. It goes into every decision related to the construction and organization of these things. When good thought isn’t consistently put into these entities, the final result reflects the deficiency. Do everything you can to make good design a high priority, and it will be reflected in the way your customers see your company, buy your products and services, and stick around for the long haul.
