Zara Tycoon Amancio Ortega Becomes World’s 6th Richest Man

Amancio Ortega

Zara tycoon Amancio Ortega has achieved other major feet. With a net worth of $67.7 billion, Amancio Ortega, founder of the world’s largest fashion retail group Inditex, has been ranked the 6th richest person globally, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, that was topped by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

The important thing is that Amancio Ortega has left behind the founder of Google Larry Page ($63.3) and Serge Brin ($61.5B). Amancio Ortega is also the second richest person in Europe.

Jeff Bezos with a net worth of $112 billion topped the list, followed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates ($111 billion) and Bernard Arnault, CEO, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton ($104 billion) in the second and third positions, respectively.

As of December 2, 2019, these are the top 10 richest people in the world

  1. Jeff Bezos: $112 billion
  2. Bill Gates: $111 billion
  3. Bernard Arnault: $104 billion
  4. Warren Buffett: $86.9 billion
  5. Mark Zuckerberg: $77.0 billion
  6. Amancio Ortega: $67.7 billion
  7. Larry Page: $63.3 billion
  8. Charles Koch: $61.6 billion
  9. Julia Flesher Koch: $61.6 billion
  10. Sergey Brin: $61.5 billion

Amancio Ortega stepped down as chairman of Inditex, the owner of Zara, in 2011 but he still owns 59% of the world’s biggest fashion retailer, which also owns other popular fashion brands like Massimo Dutti, Pull and Bear, Massimo Dutti, and Bershka.

Diversifying his fashion fortune to preserve his sizeable wealth, Pontegadea, retail tycoon Amancio Ortega’s real estate business, is about to buy The Post Building, a 320,000sq ft ex-Royal Mail sorting office between Tottenham Court Road and Holborn stations. The deal is rumored to be for around £600 million.
