Washington Post CEO Fred Ryan to step down; Patty Stonesifer appointed as the interim CEO

The Washington Post has announced that Fred Ryan (Frederick J. Ryan, Jr.), it’s Publisher and chief executive, will be stepping down to lead a newly formed Center on Public Civility at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. Although he will continue to serve as publisher until August, his departure marks the end of his nine-year tenure as Publisher and CEO of The Washington Post. Jeff Bezos said Monday that his “longtime friend and colleague” Patty Stonesifer will take over as interim CEO. Ryan will remain as a publisher through August.

Patty Stonesifer has been appointed as the interim CEO of The Washington Post. In this role, she will oversee the transition and lead the search process for a new Publisher and CEO for the organization. Patty Stonesifer brings extensive experience to the position, having previously served as the founding CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and holding executive positions at Microsoft. Her expertise will be valuable in guiding The Washington Post during this transition period and ensuring a smooth succession process for the organization’s next leader.

In addition to her previous roles, Patty Stonesifer has an impressive track record of board service. She has served on the Board of Regents and was Chair of the Smithsonian Institution and the White House Council for Community Solutions. She holds board positions at Amazon, Rockefeller Foundation, Co-Impact, and TheDream.us. Stonesifer’s diverse board experiences highlight her commitment to various sectors and expertise in driving impactful change. Before her interim role at The Washington Post, she served as the President and CEO of Martha’s Table, a prominent non-profit organization in Washington, D.C., focused on supporting children, families, and communities. Her leadership and social impact background makes her well-suited to guide The Washington Post through its transition and search for a new CEO.
