Stanford University Survey: 12 Greek scientists among the top ones globally

A team of professors from Stanford University in the United States has published a list of the top scientists around the world. This list includes – among others- 12 Greek professors of the Athens University of Economics and Business. The rankings were based on the research “Data for Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators” 2020. The scientists were evaluated for their scientific work in 2019. More specifically, the evaluation was based on the impact of their research work and mainly on the reports they received according to the Scopus database in a total of 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields.

Here are the 12 Greek professors of the Athens University of Economics and Business:

  1. Dimitris Karlis
    Dimitris Karlis is a Professor at the Department of Statistics of the Athens University of Economics and Business. He has published about 80 articles in international statistical journals. The journals he has published articles include the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series A, Statistics in Medicine, Statistics and Computing, and several others. His research interests include computational statistics and algorithms, analysis of multivariate discrete data, distribution mixes, statistical models for applications in sports, modeling of dependent data using copulas functions and more. He is an Associate Editor in the journals Metron journal, Communications in Statistics (Theory and Methods and Computation and Simulation) and IMA Journal of Management Mathematics and Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment.
  2. Diomidis Spinellis
    Diomidis Spinellis is a Professor at the Department of Management Science and Technology of the Athens University of Economics and Business. In 2013 he worked at Google as a senior software engineer. His research interests focus on software technology, computer system security and cloud computing infrastructure. His scholarly work includes the award-winning and widely translated books “Code Reading: The Open Source Perspective” and “Code Quality: The Open Source Perspective” as well as over 300 scientific articles. His latest book is entitled “Effective Debugging: 66 Specific Ways to Debug Software and Systems”.
  3. Dionisis Skarmeas
    He graduated from the Department of Economics of the University of Piraeus. He received his MBA and PhD in Marketing from Cardiff University. He has worked at Cardiff University, the University of Piraeus and the University of Leeds. His research interests focus on the fields of International Marketing, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Corporate Responsibility & Green Marketing and Distribution Networks. He is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of International Marketing and International Marketing Review and ad hoc reviewer of articles in the Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Industrial Marketing Management and European Journal of Marketing.
  4. Iordanis Koutsopoulos
    From 2013 till now he is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science at Athens University of Economics and Business. Iordanis Koutsopoulos has 21 journal publications and 56 conference publications. He has also participated in many funded research projects such as the European Research Council (ERC) competition runner-up award through the Operational Program “Education and lifelong learning – NCRF 2007-2013), for the project “RECITAL: Resource Management for Self-coordinated Autonomic Wireless Networks”.
  5. Anastasios Xepapadeas
    Anastasios Xepapadeas is a Professor of Economic Theory and Policy at the Department of International and European Economic Studies of the Athens University of Economics and Business and Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics of the University of Bologna. In May 2018, he was elected a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. He is also co-editor of Environmental and Resource Economics, a member of the editorial board of the Annual Review of Resource Economics and associate editor of Dynamic Games and Applications. He has published over 135 articles in leading magazines.
  6. Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri is a world-renowned professor in the field of environmental economics and a world leader in sustainable development. She is widely recognized as a pioneer in innovative, human-centered, interdisciplinary systems for sustainable interaction between nature, society and the economy. Professor Phoivi Kountouris is included in the list of women economists in the world with the most references in her scientific work, with 15 published books and more than 300 published scientific articles. She is a University Professor (at the highest academic level) at the School of Economics in Athens University of Economics and Business.
  7. Christos Tarantilis
    Christos Tarantilis is a Professor of Management Science at the Department of Management Science and Technology of the Athens University of Economics and Business. He has published 66 scientific articles in international journals rated “Impact Factor”, 18 articles in category 4 and 28 articles in category 3 of the list of international journals in business administration as announced by Chartered Association of Business Schools (ABS) of Great Britain. In addition, Professor Tarantilis’ scientific work has received more than 5,430 citations according to Google Scholar and he has developed research collaborations with fellow University Professors of North America and Western Europe.
  8. Maria Vakola
    Maria Vakola works as an associate professor and for the last twenty years has been researching, teaching and advising companies on human resource management. She has 30 publications in prestigious journals of human resource management and organizational psychology and has published five books. Among the journals she has published are the Journal of Applied Psychology, Human Relations, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, etc. She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science and Editor of the HR Case Study Series.
  9. Dimitris Gritzalis
    Dimitris Gritzalis is a Professor of Cyber Security at the Department of Informatics of the Athens University of Economics and Business. Also, Director of the Postgraduate Program in Information Systems and Director of the Research Group on Information Security and Critical Infrastructure Protection (INFOSEC).
  10. Michalis Vazirgiannis
    He is the founder (1998) and leads the research group “Knowledge Mining from Databases and the World Wide Web” at the Department of Informatics of the Athens University of Economics. He has introduced for the first time in Greece the “Data Mining” as a course at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, while the educational textbook he has published is taught in almost all Greek Universities. He has attracted and directed a significant number of competitive national and international research and development projects in the field of Informatics with a total budget of over 1.3 million euros. He has been a consultant to public organizations in matters of information systems and technical monitoring of projects. He holds two patents.
  11. Panagiotis Louridas
    Panagiotis Louridas is an Associate Professor at the Department of Management Science and Technology of the Athens University of Economics and Business. His research interests are in software technology, algorithms, security, large data processing, and systems implementation. He is the author of the book “Real World Algorithms”, published by MIT Press. It has been translated into various languages and is used as a textbook in universities abroad.
  12. George Xylomenos
    George Xylomenos is a Professor in the Department of Informatics of the Athens University of Economics and Business. His current research interests include methods for improving the performance of Internet applications and protocols over mobile and wireless networks, providing Quality of Service in multimedia applications, and supporting broadband services over next-generation wired and wireless networks.
