The BA (Hons) Fashion Design works extremely closely with industry, enabling us to offer exceptional opportunities and internships with top international design companies ensuring that our students have the skills and industry experience that makes them highly employable on graduation.

Our June 2016 graduates have already gained extensive experience whilst on the course working with companies including Mary Katrantzou, Chloe, Christopher Kane, Celine, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, Calvin Klein, Proenza Schouler, J.W. Anderson, Chalayan, Adidas, Tom Ford, Visionaire, Viktor & Rolf, Marc Jacobs, and Craig Green.

Last year’s graduates (2015) are now employed by top international design houses including Max Mara, Burberry, Harrods, Versace, Alexander McQueen, and Tom Ford. While David Ferreira showed his runway collection at New York Fashion Week in September 2015, and Robert Einer was named the NEWGEN On-to-watch in February 2016 at London Fashion Week and was selected as the winner of the Saks emerging designer award in April 2016.

Recent Westminster graduates that show at London Fashion Week include Claire Barrow, Ashley Williams, Roberta Einer, Mary Benson and Liam Hodges. While past alumni include Christopher Bailey, Chief Creative Officer of Burberry, Stuart Vevers of Coach, Katie Hillier, Creative Director of Marc by Marc Jacobs, Michael Herz.

Integral to the success of the course and of our graduates is the numerous opportunities to engage with the fashion industry through either live projects, competitions, or internships.

The first year of the course concentrates on introducing a variety of skills related to all areas of 2D and 3D fashion practice. Design, research, illustration, cut & construction print, and CAD are all covered. There are also lessons in life drawing and illustration.

The second year focuses on addressing the needs of the fashion industry. This is accomplished through:

  • Industry internships
  • Guest industry speakers and lecturers
  • Industry-led design projects

Students undertake two periods of internship during the course. In the second year, they spend eight weeks in the run up to London Fashion Week working for an LFW runway designer, while students on the four-year pathway undertake a year-long period of placements between Levels 5 and 6 of the course.

The internship year allows students to work within the international fashion industry for a far more substantial time, usually abroad in Paris, New York or Milan. It also further enhances the profile of industrial placement within the framework of the students’ undergraduate studies.

In the final year, students develop their signature style in both portfolio work and design projects. Research and design development lead to a runway collection range being realised.

One of the unique strengths of the course is that the status of illustration and portfolio work is given equal importance as our graduate runway collections. The course has won the BFC portfolio and illustration prize numerous times in recent years. In June each year we hold a Graduate Portfolio day at The Ace Hotel, in Shoreditch. This is attended by HR and design studio representatives from a large number of international fashion houses, and many students get job offers from this. Additionally, all our graduate portfolios are available online for companies to view by request, on our password protected site.

For companies that cannot make it to our Portfolio Day, we also arrange for them to come in and see our students and view their final portfolio work and collections. Recent visitors to the course include representatives from Creative Skillset, Lewis Alexander Executive Search, The Bridge Company, The December Agency, Denza International, Parsons, Savile Row, Inditex, H&M, Adidas, and MAC Makeup.

The BA (Hons) Fashion Design course has an exceptional amount of studio space for all students to use. Each year group have their own dedicated studio, and each student has their own individual design space for their entire time with us.

Additionally, there are also two specialist sewing machine rooms, two large fitting rooms, a computer lab, open gallery space, a garment archive and research room, pattern cutting room, fashion print studio and dye room.

In September 2016, we are launching our 2-year MA Menswear course where students will have even more space. Situated on a whole floor of the fashion department, each student will have their own space, with additional fitting rooms, tutorial rooms, menswear showroom, and a dedicated menswear garment archive.

The Westminster Menswear Archive is unique to Westminster and will contain over 2000 examples of vintage and archetypical menswear garments which will be freely available for students to use as part of their research design process, and also available by appointment for design teams from fashion houses to use for their design research as well.
