About:

Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) is a distinctive multi-campus university with a tradition of commitment to global education. With two New Jersey campuses close to Manhattan (Florham Campus and Metropolitan Campus), and two international campuses (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Wroxton, Oxfordshire, England), the University infuses the curriculum with global perspectives, provides abundant international and cosmopolitan educational experiences, and hosts a significant international student population. In recent years, the University has grown not only in the geographic spread of its campuses, but also through aggressive expansion of academic programs from certificate through doctoral level. The University is poised from a position of solid strength to launch further expansion of academic programs in many fields – all with a strong arts and sciences core. FDU was also the first American College to own an overseas campus in Wroxton, Oxfordshire, England.

The International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Fairleigh Dickinson University (also known as FDU Hospitality) is the oldest program of its type in the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan Area, and one of the oldest in the United States. The hospitality program dates back to the University’s founding in 1942, and the school has graduated thousands of hospitality industry professionals ever since. Its alumni hold many notable domestic and international leadership and management positions in the hospitality industry, and each year, the School receives more than 700 intern and career track job opportunities for its students, both locally and internationally.

Adding unique value to the School’s program is the coordinated series of Professional Development Sequence (PDS) courses in effect for more than two decades. Critical professional skills and attitudes are developed as a consequence of this curriculum. Each semester, all undergraduate students are enrolled in a PDS class which offer the Professional Development Director and students opportunities to develop co-curricular activities designed to enhance professionalism. Integrated into the B.S. degree are ample opportunities for students to receive exposure to critical thinking skills, and the curriculum inculcates an awareness of values, skills, and attitudes that will prepare them for responsible citizenship roles in business and society.

Undergraduate B.S. students are expected to complete 1,200 hours of diverse work experience throughout their undergraduate studies. To meet this requirement, the student works in a sophisticated laboratory – the New York metropolitan area’s hospitality industry (students can choose to work elsewhere – either somewhere closer to their permanent residence or with an employer who posts opportunities with our faculty and staff).

In addition to differentiating our program from others, the Professional Development Sequence serves an important role in engaging the students in the program and in retention.
