White House: The Presidents of the USA and their adorable dogs

Except for Donald Trump, all the US presidents had their dogs with them during their time in the White House. There is a long tradition concerning the USA presidents and their beloved pets. For example, Joe Biden moved in the White House with his two German shepherds, Champ and Major. Furthermore, Major is the first shelter dog living in the White House.

Starting from Harry Truman who was the 33rd American President, during the years between 1945 and 1953 till nowadays you will find information in this article for some of the US presidents and their dogs. Feller was the name of Harry Truman’s cocker spaniel dog. Feller had a leash printed with his name.

John F. Kennedy, mainly known as JFK served as the 35th president of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. When the Kennedy family moved into the White House, they brought with them a Welsh terrier named Charlie. John F. Kennedy also had another dog named Pushinka. However, during the years of his stay he obtained two hamsters, a cat and a canary. Clipper, his German shepherd was also well – known.

Lyndon Baines Johnson served as the 36th president of the United States from 1963 to 1969. He had two beagles, “Him” and “Her”. Lyndon Baines Johnson and the members of his family loved a lot beagles.

Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 until 1974. When the Nixon family moved into the White House, they arrived with a Yorkshire terrier named Pasha, and a poodle named Vicky and then was added an Irish setter named King Timahoe.

Gerald Ford served as the 38th president of the United States from August 1974 to January 1977. Liberty, a golden retriever, was Gerald Ford’s dog. Liberty was given to the president as an 8-month-old puppy.

Jimmy Carter (39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981) named his dog Grits,  in honor of the Carter family’s Southern roots. The dog was born on the same day Jimmy Carter won the presidential election.

Ronald Reagan (40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989) and his wife Nancy were the owners of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Rex. The couple also had a Bouvier des Flandres named Lucky.

George H.W. Bush who served as the 41st president of the United States from 1989 to 1993 was the owner of an English Springer Spaniel named Millie. Her whole name was Mildred “Millie” Kerr Bush in honor of Mildred Caldwell Kerr, a long-time friend of the Bushes. It is also the name of Kerr’s granddaughter, Millie Kerr. Ranger was also a family dog.

Bill Clinton (42nd president of the United States from 1993 to 2001) owned a male chocolate-colored Labrador Retriever named Buddy. The Clintons’ other pet was a cat named Socks.

George W. Bush served as the 43rd president of the United States from 2001 to 2009.  He owned Barney, a Scottish Terrier. Barney had his own official web page which redirected to an extension of the White House website. Barney was born in New Jersey and he was often referred to as the “First Dog”. Barney was euthanized due to lymphoma.

Barack Obama was the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. Obama family had two famous Portuguese Water dogs named Bo and Sunny. Bo was the first one to join the family. After him came Sunny.
