What Do You Think Of Amazon New Gift-Giving Patent- Electronic Gifting?
World’s largest online retailer, Amazon.com has just been awarded a patent for “electronic gifting,” – allows digital gift-givers to wait until a recipient has accepted their present before paying for it. The recipient can also exchange it for another item.
It looks a lot like similar to Karma Science, a gift-giving app that Facebook just recently purchased for $80 million. Congratulations!
There is one unusual twist: The patent describes the ability for the giver to delay payment until the recipient has accepted the digital gift, or cancel the order (and avoid payment) if the gift hasn’t been accepted and downloaded by the recipient after a certain period of time, says Todd Bishop. You can read the patent in full here.
If you remember back in 2010 Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) patented similar system that would let people exchange unwanted gifts for those they actually want – even before they get them.
Also there is speculation that this conflicts with a recent Facebook acquisition Karma, a gift-giving app. So don’t be surprised if some post-patent action follows.
