Wikifarmer: These are the top 10 most in-demand agricultural products

Wikifarmer is a global platform for agricultural products. The platform, which the two Greeks created, connects producers and buyers from all over the world. The product that most consumers searched for on the forum in 2022 was oil. In the first place on the list is sunflower oil, followed by olive oil.

Following the war in Ukraine and the consequences of climate change, sunflower oil is in short supply on the market. So, it is considered a precious product. Olive oil remains one of the most favorite products of the Mediterranean diet and is thus in great demand. In fact, due to the lack of sunflower oil, most consumers turned to olive oil. However, its price, mainly in Greece, has increased significantly lately.

Another Mediterranean product is in third place on the list. This product is tomatoes. Tomatoes are delicious in salads, sauces, soups, and more. In the fourth place on the list, we have apples. In fact, people following the pandemic turned to a more healthy diet with many fruits and vegetables. So, it is very logical that the above products were in great demand in 2022.

Kernel oil and corn oil follow in the 5th and 6th places on the list, respectively. Kernel oil is light and comes after the processing of the inner part of the olives. It is cheap and ideal for frying. For these two reasons, it is in great demand. Corn oil is also appropriate for frying. It is mainly used in the production of many sweets. Nobody can deny the healthy role of honey in a balanced daily nutritional routine. For this reason, many people use honey in their everyday lives since it is synonymous with health and wellness. The honey comes in 7th place on the list.

In eighth place, we have a popular seafood species. The shrimps. Shrimps can make tasty pasta dishes and sauces, or they can be eaten plain, boiled, or fried. The Wikifarmer identified an increased demand for shrimps in 2022, not only from households but also from businesses in the tourism and catering sectors. In fact, it is estimated that food consumption in aquatic ecosystems will have doubled by 2050.

The white cheese (feta) comes in 9th place. Searches for «feta» mainly come from Mediterranean countries. Although purchasing behavior remained subdued until mid-2022, increased demand for packaged products such as lentils, which came in at 10th place, indicates that there has been a trend towards stockpiling by some consumers and businesses.

It is worth mentioning that Wikifarmer, the Greek direct farmer-to-business agricultural marketplace, has raised €5 million ($5.37 million) in funding from Point Nine. The Athens-based startup was co-founded by Ilias Sousis, who previously headed up Youtube for Google in Greece, Cyprus, and Malta, and Agronomist Petros SagosIt has helped thousands of businesses reduce operating costs by up to 30%, and farmers make their products available directly without intermediaries.
