Who is more profitable right now Pearson plc (PSO), McGraw-Hill (MHP) or Apollo Group (APOL)?

Pearson plc (PSO) is an international media company dominating in education, business information and consumer publishing, owner of Financial Times and Penguin books. Pearson had free cash flow in 2008- $937 million, 2009- $1.22 billion and in 2010 $1.45 billion.

Let’s compare it with peers McGraw-Hill (MHP) had free cash flow in 2008- $1.05 billion, 2009- $1.24 billion and in 2010 $1.34 billion. Apollo Group (APOL) had free cash flow in 2008- $621 million, 2009- $833 million and in 2010 $877 million. In both the cases McGraw-Hill and Apollo Group, Pearson plc is definitely did the best job increasing profitability from year to year.

Now let’s compare reinvesting or capital expenditures, Pearson spend $109 million in 2008, $100 million in 2009 and $119 million in 2010. Whereas McGraw-Hill spend $131 million in 2008, $92 million in 2009 and $115 million in 2010. Apollo Group spend $105 million in 2008, $127 million in 2009 and $168 million in 2010. If you see closely Pearson is making consistent reinvestment, which is always good for business.

Although all these three companies Pearson plc (PSO), McGraw-Hill (MHP) or Apollo Group (APOL) stocks could possibly become a stock for your portfolio right now but my favorite will be Pearson plc (PSO), let’s have a look how company and its closest peers is doing right now:

News Corporation (NWSA) is trading at a price 17.65 a dramatic change of -0.69 and % change -3.76% , company has Earnings per share 1.11 and P/E ratio 15.86 Currently, the company has a Market capitalization (total value of a company in the stock market) of approximately 46.36B

Reed Elsevier plc (ADR) (RUK) is trading at a price 35.62 a dramatic change of -0.76 and % change -2.09% , company has Earnings per share 1.87 and P/E ratio 19 Currently, the company has a Market capitalization (total value of a company in the stock market) of approximately 17.27B

The McGraw-Hill Compan… (MHP) is trading at a price 41.17 a dramatic change of -1.3 and % change -3.06% , company has Earnings per share 2.72 and P/E ratio 15.13 Currently, the company has a Market capitalization (total value of a company in the stock market) of approximately 12.54B

Gannett Co., Inc. (GCI) is trading at a price 13.84 a dramatic change of -0.38 and % change -2.67% , company has Earnings per share 2.23 and P/E ratio 6.19 Currently, the company has a Market capitalization (total value of a company in the stock market) of approximately 3.32B
