How to Use Twitter to Find Jobs?

By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:February 9, 2010

Twitter has taken off like a wildfire, fantabulous for network relationships and finding clients. No one expected that individuals would use it to find new  jobs. The microblogging site asks no more of you than to tell the world, in a very short phrase, what you’re doing right now, in this moment. You just need to  input the basics about who you are and why someone might want to take time out of a busy life to follow you on Twitter, that is, listen to your tweets.

To give you a head start, here are just a few tips for using Twitter:

  • Write up a good bio.
  • Make a good avatar (photograph of your face ).
  • Use all 140 characters not less.
  • Constantly tweet about what you’re doing.
  • Respond to other people using the @reply method.
  • Share useful information that others can use.
  • Create an easy-to-remember Twitter name.
  • Don’t act desperate.
  • Be respectful of others’ time.

As someone who is looking for new job opportunities, you may focus on tweets that showcase articles you have written, meetings and conventions you’re attending, news you’ve come across related to your industry, and anything else that would demonstrate to a potential employer that you’re bright, connected,  ambitious, and hard working.

Structure and vocabulary of Twitter:

Tweet: A message, also called an update.
Twitter Badge: Display your Twitter updates to your blog, MySpace page, and so on.
Follow: When you decide to follow someone else’s tweets.
Public Timeline: The steady stream of messages from Twitter members who have chosen to keep their tweets public.
Follower: When someone is following your tweets.
Direct Messages: Messages you send directly to another Twitter user.
Tweet-up: A face-to-face meeting of Twitter users.
Tweeple: People who use Twitter.

How and what to Tweet if you are Job Seekers?

It’s one thing to tweet about what you’re eating or What music you are listening to…

Examples:

“Out of my mind – back in five minutes.
“As I said before, I never repeat myself.”
“I did not slap you, I simply high fived your face.”
“wondering if anyone has actually sailed the seven seas.”
“so fat people use her dandruff as quilts.”
“wondering if Burger King is king and Dairy Queen is queen, who is the prince?”

But if you’re in the market for a new job, you’ll want each of your tweets to shine as an example of who you are and what you can do. Here are examples of tweets with a purpose.

“See my latest blog post on XML user interface at tinyurlxxx.xxx.”
“Have a Fully Integrated Marketing Plan http://short.to/xxx.xxx.”

Here are two pointers first be as specific as possible and think before you tweet. It would be more helpful if a tweet something like this:

“Software Architect, Denver (OK to relo to west coast), w/10 yrs of IT exp. ASP.NET MySQL PHP RoR SOAP PDF JDF XML user interface. #jobangels, #job, #jobseeker”

Finding people to follow:

You can click on “find People hyperlink” (https://twitter.com/invitations/find_on_twitter) at the top of most Twitter pages. Of course, you will want to  follow people from your e-mail address books and other sources that may be in a position to hire you. If you are looking for a job in a given field, it definitely pays to follow people in that field who happen to be on Twitter.
