Boeing tentative agreement with Danish Amplex Provides Intelligent Streetlight Management Systems to US Cities

By Hendrik L Clarke for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:December 14, 2009

The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) on Dec. 13 announced a teaming agreement with Danish clean-technology company Amplex to offer an intelligent streetlight management system that could decrease energy consumption in major U.S. cities by 25 to 35 percent, significantly reducing their carbon footprint. Boeing and Amplex made the announcement at the Bright Green Conference and Exhibition in Copenhagen.

“Streetlights are responsible for up to 40 percent of a municipality’s electricity budget and consume between 2 and 4 percent of the total electricity produced in the United States,” said Amplex Chairman Jens Hørup Jensen.

By combining Amplex’s AmpLight solution, which already operates several million streetlights throughout the world, with Boeing Energy Solutions’ expertise in sales, contracting, program management, implementation, service and support, the two companies can offer tailored energy-savings solutions to U.S. cities.

“This is an opportunity for Boeing and Amplex to offer a power and cost savings solution that can benefit every major city in the United States,” said Boeing Northern Europe President Jan Närlinge.

The AmpLight system includes central control, monitoring, an energy savings mode, remote and power quality metering, voltage stabilization and wireless communications/IT solutions. In addition to reducing energy consumption and costs, AmpLight also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Amplex estimates that if the 10 largest metropolitan areas in the United States switched to the AmpLight system, greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by nearly 600,000 metric tons – the equivalent of removing more than 200,000 cars from the road, every year.

With offices on most continents and partners worldwide, Denmark-based Amplex has established a global presence and solid experience in implementing energy-efficient solutions for municipalities and utility companies. Amplex delivers intelligent management systems for several million streetlights every day, including 50 percent of all Danish streetlights.
