SanDisk Starts Shipping X4 Flash chips
By Bettina Padurano for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:October 13, 2009
SanDisk’s (NASDAQ:SNDK) X4 tech packs four bits of data into each memory cell, compared with the typical one or two bits. That means they’ll be able to far exceed the 32GB limit on SDHC, microSDHC and others, and they’ve started shipping.
The memory technology itself–the 4 bits per cell 64-gigabit memory–is codeveloped and co-owned by SanDisk and Toshiba. The X4 controller technology is solely owned by SanDisk.
Right now, they’re only shipping in 8GB and 16GB capacities, which have been long available, but soon they’ll be releasing 64GB and even higher flash memory. The X4 tech doesn’t yet extend to SSDs, though it’s not really clear why, but it’s still great news for us gadget hounds. Many smartphones, especially those running Android, WinMo and BlackBerry OS, rely on microSDHC cards for memory, and a 64GB or even higher capacity card would make those much more viable as, say, multimedia machines. SanDisk assures us that the price will not skyrocket, which is a relief. X4 chips should start appearing in stores very soon, Brooke Crothers reported.
SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK), Founded in 1988 by Dr. Eli Harari, an internationally recognized authority on non-volatile memory technology, SanDisk has grown to become the world’s largest supplier of innovative flash memory data storage products.
Serving both consumers (with more than 240,000 retail storefronts worldwide) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), SanDisk designs, develops, manufactures and markets flash storage products for a wide variety of electronic systems and digital devices. SanDisk also licenses its technology to a number of other industry-leading companies.
With flash memory’s capability for storing large amounts of data in a compact, removable or embedded format, SanDisk’s products have helped drive the exponential growth in sales of digital cameras, multi-function mobile phones, USB flash drives, digital audio/video players, and other digital consumer devices.
SanDisk currently has more than 1,100 U.S. patents, more than 600 foreign patents, and more than 1440 patent applications pending in the U.S. SanDisk is the only company, worldwide, that has the rights to both manufacture and sell every major flash card format, including CompactFlash, SD, miniSD, microSD, MultiMediaCard, Reduced Size MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC), Memory Stick PRO and related Memory Stick products, xD-Picture Card and USB flash drives.
