Couples Retreat starring Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau Is Top Weekend Film

Couples Retreat, a comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, opened as the top film in U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend, with ticket sales of $35.3 million for General Electric Co.’s Universal Pictures.

Vaughn co-wrote ‘Couples Retreat’ with his ‘Swingers’ and ‘The Break-Up’ co-star Jon Favreau. The fright flick – shot for just $15,000 – did big business in its first full weekend after two weeks of midnight-only screenings, coming in at No. 4 with $7.1 million in just 160 cinemas, a fraction of the theater count for other top releases.

“Couples Retreat” marks the first domestic hit for Universal since April’s “Fast & Furious.” A string of disappointments since then, including “State of Play” and “Land of the Lost,” contributed to the dismissal last week of Chairmen David Linde and Marc Shmuger. In a bit of Hollywood irony, the studio had its first hit in half a year just days after their departure.
