Why Obama deserves the Nobel Peace prize?
By Thomas Frommherz for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:October 9, 2009
In a surprise move, President Barack Obama was just awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. A stunning decision designed to encourage his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism.
Obama is only the third sitting President to earn the honor, following Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.
Laughably, Barack Obama was nominated for the award in February 2009 (Feb. 1 nomination deadline), just two weeks into his presidency.
But Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the five-member Nobel committee, said “we have not given the prize for what may happen in the future. We are awarding Obama for what he has done in the past year. And we are hoping this may contribute a little bit for what he is trying to do.”
Someone on Twitter actually said to me Obama won because he was the first black US president. Enough of the race-card playing, it’s getting boring.
I had to double check on twitter to convince myself this wasn’t a hoax. I love the guy but he hasn’t DONE anything yet.
I supported Barack Obama’s bid to be President, but I have to say I am baffled as to why he has been awrded the Nobel Peace Prize. To which country or region did he bring peace in the nine days between his inauguration.
- Is it a part of U.S. stimulus package?
- Ask Ben Bernanke?
- I wonder how much that cost Americans?
- What has he accomplished so far ?
- This is an INSULT to all the previous winners!!!
Well, that certainly cheapens that award. Now i thank god, Mahatma Gandhi was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Now the Nobel Peace Prize has about as much credibility as the Miss Universe pageant or MTV award.
Just imagine how impressive this would be if he had actually earned it.
