Dell preps Googlephone for AT&T network not Microsoft- Android over Windows Mobile

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL), the computer and services company is also getting into the smartphone market – but using Google inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG), not Microsoft’s, software. It is planning the US launch of an Android-powered full screen smartphone in 2010 on the AT&T (NYSE:T)) network.
The company had planned to launch two new handsets, an Android and a Windows Mobile device, at this year’s 3GSM conference
That device, which the company claimed was a prototype, was dubbed the Mini 3i and had a three megapixel camera, but no Wi-Fi or 3G support.
Dell’s Android plan would also put Googly devices on the same US carrier as Apple’s iPhone. At the moment, the Jobsian status symbol is exclusively tied to AT&T’s (rather overloaded) network.
A Dell Android would also be the PC manufacturer’s first foray into the US handset market. The company showed off a handset prototype in China this summer, and according to The Journal’s sources, the Android phone is a similar device, offering a touchscreen and a camera.
But the decision to go with Android is a blow to Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, which has just received a substantial revamp that the company had hoped would boost its fortunes in the smartphone market.
