France Telecom appoints new deputy CEO Stephane Richard as Louis-Pierre Wenes quits over staff suicides

Stephane Richard has been appointed deputy CEO in charge of operations in France, France Telecom (FT) (FTE.PA).
Stephane Richard, an ex-aide to the French finance minister who is to take over as CEO in 2011, will step up early to replace Wenes, the company said.
In a statement, the French telecommunications operator said Mr. Louis-Pierre Wenes, current deputy CEO in charge of operations in France, asked France Telecom’s Chairman and CEO Didier Lombard to be relieved of his responsibilities.
Mr. Wenes, who has been in charge of French operations since December 2002, will remain with the company as adviser to Mr. Lombard, a company spokesman said.
There have been 24 suicides at France Telecom since the beginning of 2008 and 13 attempts, according to labour unions, a pro rata rate broadly in line with the population as a whole.
Some unions and left-wing political parties last week urged CEO Didier Lombard to step aside after a worker threw himself from a bridge but the government said Lombard had its full confidence.
A former state monopoly which employs 100,000 people in France and trades internationally as Orange, the telecoms giant has undergone major restructuring, which unions say have left workers stressed and demoralised.
