World War II Liberty ship that’s buried is leaking oil
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:September 28, 2009
A sunken ship, possibly a more than 400-foot long World War II-era cargo vessel, is leaking fuel oil in the Gulf of Mexico off Texas.
The Coast Guard says the vessel is consistent in size and shape of a 417-foot long, 56-foot wide Liberty ship. The Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration says U.S. shipyards built 2,751 Liberty ships during World War II to haul troops and military cargo around the world.
A Unified Command consisting of MSU Port Arthur, the Coast Guard’s Gulf Strike Team, and the Texas General Land Office have been working with the following agencies to remove the oil from the submerged ship wreck:
Texas Parks and Wildlife Service
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
National Pollution Fund Center
Resolve Marine and Garner Environmental
The U.S. Coast Guard says it will take two weeks to reopen a section of the busy Houston Ship Channel after fuel oil leaked from a barge.
The Houston Chronicle said Sunday that the spill did not damage the other ship, which was carrying aviation fuel.
The incident closed the channel to all ship traffic north of the Sidney Sherman Bridge. Ten ships and barges in the immediate area will not be allowed to move until the oil is cleared.
