How Google’s new Search Snippets is more Useful?

By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:September 28, 2009

Google has introduced a new feature that I can only describe as ‘results within results.’ For instance, when you do a search about “trans fat” or “good cholesterol levels,” the first results offer links to more specific information related to your search in the same website. An example is the first result for the “trans fat” search: it is a link to a Wikipedia article, the “search snippet” also offers links to specific sections within that Wikipedia article.

Of course, this is nothing new in the cloud. Google just decided it was a nice new feature and they’ve included it. I believe it will be very useful though.

It’s basically search within a search similar to the search within a domain feature which Google introduced not so long ago.  The search snippets though would give you specific pages that are otherwise buried deep within the search results main page. These specific pages naturally answers the search terms that you used.

Obviously, if you want to increase the amount of calls to action for your webpages from Google results, you will want to do what you can to cater to this new feature. Luckily, this isn’t a completely mysterious part of the algorithm (though the links are generated algorithmically) that Google is leaving you to figure out for yourself. A post on Google’s Webmaster Central blog essentially tells you what you have to do to get these links in snippets.

Now Google may add “deep” links to relevant sections on the page, making it possible to go directly to the information you are looking for.

The Google Blog gives the query “trans fat” as an example.

One of the results is from the Wikipedia. Google will now add links to sections of the Wikipedia page, sections on sub topics like Chemistry and Nutritional Guidelines.

These links are normally given as a list of keywords below the snippet, although Google may also include a clickable phrase within the snippet itself.
