What is Microsoft Courier?
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:September 23, 2009
According to a recent article on Gizmodo the Courier is “ a real device” which is currently still in its prototype stages, it is thought that the Courier is more like a booklet than a tablet as it has two 7 inch screens with a central hinge giving it a booklet-like look.
As with any prototype design there is talk about a wide range of features, for the courier these include charging via an inductive pad, a wide-range of multitouch finger gestures and also the hinge is said to act as a “pocket” for items you want to move from one screen to the other.
The Microsoft Courier actually features two 7-inch touchscreens and resembles a booklet. The photos and video of the Microsoft Courier are apparently showing a real device, but the Courier is still in a prototype stage.
The authentic-looking images of the ‘Courier’ were leaked to Gizmodo by an internal division of the Entertainment & Devices section of the Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft. The tablet device is reportedly being developed under the supervision of Microsoft’s chief experience officer, J Allard.
The pictures show that the ‘Courier,’ which looks more like an e-reader than a computer, has two 7-inch multi-touch screens that can also support the use of a stylus for input and writing. With the two screens held together by a hinge, the device folds out like a book.
Among the other specs of the ‘Courier’ are: Wi-Fi; a home button; a camera on the back side; and possibly an inductive charging pad. The Gizmodo video shows that the interface of the device is “really fluid and really fast.”
Talking about the interface, Matt Buchanan, the contributing editor of the Gizmodo site, said: “There’s definitely been a lot of thought that’s gone into the user interface. This isn’t something that was hastily thrown together.”
Gizmodo writes:
Until recently, it was a skunkworks project deep inside Microsoft, only known to the few engineers and executives working on it—Microsoft’s brightest, like Entertainment & Devices tech chief and user-experience wizard J. Allard, who’s spearheading the project. Currently, Courier appears to be at a stage where Microsoft is developing the user experience and showing design concepts to outside agencies.
Microsoft has a history of collaborating with other firms, especially in the E&D division: Zune and Xbox have both gone through similar design processes. (And plans for the Microsoft Store leaked through a third-party agency were confirmed as genuine prototype layouts and concepts.) This video is branded Pioneer Studios, a Microsoft division within E&D that specializes in this kind of work, working with another agency that’s a long-time Microsoft collaborator on confidential projects.
