Intel shows off: next-generation Xeon quad-core server chips, microserver, Larrabee graphics chip…
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:September 23, 2009
Intel is set to start production of its next-generation Xeon quad-core server chips ahead of schedule, which could then appear in systems as early as the first quarter of next year.
“We’re on track for production in the first quarter,” said Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of Intel’s server platforms group during an interview at the Intel Developer Forum. The chips will ship to system makers, and servers based on those chips could appear just “around that same time frame,” Skaugen said.
In another news, Intel is looking to create a new category in the server space: the “microserver.”
During his keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum here Sept. 22, Sean Maloney, newly installed executive vice president and general manager of the chip maker’s Intel Architecture Group, unveiled two low-power new versions of its Xeon 3400 line, a 45-watt model that will roll out later this year and a 30-watt chip that will come out in the first quarter of 2010.
Maloney also expanded on other plans Intel has for its server offerings, from the high-end Itanium processors to a collection of Xeons with varying degrees of graphics capabilities.
The microserver space will grow in importance as businesses continue to adopt such computing models as cloud computing and technologies like virtualization, driving demand for smaller servers that are relatively cheap and consume low amounts of power.
Intel’s open-source Moblin operating system is a work in progress, but looks like it’s coming together well.
At the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Intel product manager Claire Alexander shows Intel CEO Paul Otellini a demo Moblin, which will include next-generation mobile features such as a touch-screen interface, Larry Dignan.
The presentation, made late in the day on Tuesday at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, didn’t offer any unexpected cancellations or delays. However, Intel’s outline will serve as a program of sorts for the remaining chip introductions of 2009, and a guide to what to expect for 2010.
Intel consistently uses the “tick tock” model to describe its roadmap, following a new processor architecture introduction with a process shrink, and so on. The new Nehalem architecture is in the midst of its process shrink into the 32-nm Westmere product line, and the new design revision – known as “Sandy Bridge,” is due sometime in 2010, Mark Hachman wrote.
Intel demonstrated its Larrabee graphics chip for the first time Tuesday at the Intel Developer Forum.
Larrabee will be Intel’s first discrete, or standalone, graphics processor in about 10 years and is expected to compete with graphics chips from Nvidia and AMD’s ATI unit. The demo used an early “stepping,” or version, of Larrabee, which is expected to come out commercially sometime next year, Brooke Crothers wrote.
