Project Pink: Microsoft-branded Windows Mobile-based phone
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:September 22, 2009
Stories that Microsoft is planning to release smartphones, and ZDnet compiled all the rumors into one page.
under its own brand are kind of expired nowadays. The rumors first entered the scene in the year 2008. However, it seemed that Microsoft Company considered the launching of its own smartphone an issue in its business relationships with partners that used the Windows Mobile operating system.
But now there is speculation Pink could either be one handset or possibly two devices–codenamed ‘Turtle’ and ‘Pure,’ according to Engadget. There is a theory that Pink may only be a basic phone design that will be farmed out to manufacturers who can tweak the design and then slap the Microsoft name on the device.
The new Microsoft-branded phones could also be slider handsets inspired by the Sidekick. Microsoft acquired Danger, the maker of the Sidekick, last year and the Danger team that came to Microsoft is leading Project Pink development. Pink software is reportedly based on the yet-to-be-released Windows Mobile 7, Ian Paul writes.
The organization saw this introduction for what it would be – a new competing product on the smartphone market. Nonetheless, these thoughts passed Microsoft`s mind and according to specific statements found on 9to5Mac which is Apple Company`s news site, indicate that Microsoft will for sure be introducing two new smartphone models as being parts of the speculated Project Pink programmed in the year 2010.
Acquiring Danger, maker of the niche but cultish Sidekick phone, confused Microsoft’s previously clear message that it would not compete with its own Windows Mobile licensees by designing actual gadgets. Although it has repeated that assertion since, there is still widespread belief that it will produce a hardware design. The less controversial route would be to create a reference platform for the ODM/white label base on which Microsoft is likely to become more dependent as tier one customers like Palm turn their attentions to Linux-based options. But there is always the chance that Microsoft will seek to upstage Apple by offering a phone version of its Zune HD media player, one of the few products that has seen the software giant shine in the gadgets space.
If Microsoft does decide on a Zune phone, it would do well to draw on the expertise within its Danger subsidiary – though earlier in the year, The Wall Street Journal speculated that the giant would work with a partner, such as LG, on a Zune handset. In the meantime, more Danger-branded phones are likely to appear, pleasing fans of the devices, who had feared Microsoft would kill the products. The Sidekick LX was unveiled in May, and may now be followed by two lower cost models, codenamed Turtle and Pure, according to leaks.
