Intel’s Pat Gelsinger leaves for EMC

EMC Corp has hired Patrick Gelsinger, head of Intel’s core chip business, to run its storage-products operations and some smaller software units. EMC also promoted Howard Elias as head the company’s services division.

Joseph Tucci, the current chairman and CEO, said the two men, along with Chief Financial Officer David Goulden, are all possible successors as CEO.

Gelsinger, currently co-manager of Intel’s core digital enterprise group, has long been a key executive for Intel. He has also held the positions of chief technology officer and research head at Intel.

Gelsinger has been a high-profile presence at many Intel forums over the years including its Intel Developer Forum event. In fact the dark satanic rumour mill thinks he will announce his departure at the IDF meeting next week.

Apparently he is headed for storage company EMC, where he will become chief operating officer for the company’s information infrastructure product portfolio.

Gelsinger’s departure is set to trigger a number of changes at Intel with reports saying that British head of sales and marketing, Sean Maloney, will increase the size of his empire by taking server chips, graphics and other microprocessors under his wing.

According to a report on the New York Times, Intel is about to announce a couple of management changes that will see Sales and Marketing Chief Sean Maloney taking on the company’s major chip business, while Davi Perlmutter will be taking over the engineering for all chip divisions, a step forward from his current position as the head of Intel’s laptop chip division. These are, apparently, consequences of Pat Gelsinger’s said leave from Intel.
