How to Create the Right Website for Your Business

By Guest contributors for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:August 13, 2009

Web design is a tricky art and that is why an entire industry and freelance market is devoted to it.  If you are considering starting your own website then you have a couple different options to choose from to design your website.  These include writing your own HTML code, hiring an established designer from a firm, hiring a freelance designer, or buying a program like Adobe’s Dreamweaver to design.

Each path has its own requirements, pros, and cons.  The purpose of this article is to help you pick the best option for you.  This may seem impossible because each individual has their own unique situation, but you will find that your situation is not very different from many others.

The first option you have to consider is budget.  No budget, besides the money you have to pay for your domain hosting, means that you will have to writing your own HTML.  Do not be scared if you do not have any programming experience.  HTML is one of the easiest languages to learn and there are plenty of free online tutorials on the web to help you out.

The only issue with HTML is that your site will be very basic and bland looking if you need a site quickly and you do not have previous experience.  The next rung up the budget latter will lead you in the direction of a freelance designer.  All you have to do is post on an online job board or find kids in your neighborhood that have programming skills.  You would be surprised how easy it is to find a designer that will work for low wages.

If you are having trouble finding one you should visit sites like Craig’s List or just type “web design job board” into Google and you will be on your way to having a low budget website.

These first options should only be considered if you do not have the necessary funds or programming skill to create a better looking site.  Finding a freelance web designer that will work for low wages and provide high quality work is rare.  If you want the best in web designers you will have to go to the professionals.

Google search “web designer” and you will find a bunch of links, plus a list of local web designers that you can consult with face to face if you like.  The best advice that I can give to you is to visit the company’s website and look around.  If the look and feel of the site is right for you then go ahead and ask for an estimate.  Avoid a company if you think you could design their website.

The last option is purchasing software, such as Adobe’s Dreamweaver, and creating your own website.  This software is usually more expensive than most web designers’ fees.  The only reason to choose this option is if you want to learn web design or if you already are proficient with these programs.

I don’t know why someone who can already program and design a website would be reading this, but if they are then go for the software.  Do not waste precious time coding HTML because you could probably save that time and design several websites in Dreamweaver in the same time.

That is about it for trying to find the right method for getting your website up and running.  My last piece of advice is to not pick the cheapest web host.  Do your research, read reviews, and pick the ebst one for you.
