What could the Apple Tablet Apple iProd iPhone Nano New iPod offer?
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:August 5, 2009
It seems that Apple really will release a tablet computer some time in the next six months. The device will likely look and act like a big iPod Touch, but the larger screen is obviously drawing comparisons to the Kindle, Amazon’s e-book carrier.
Rumor resembling a datapoint is that the product could run as high as $800-900.
Chen from Wired writes that Apple should be looking to partner with a carrier like Verizon to subsidize the product and bring the price back toward the Kindle-plus-cheap iPod range of $500.
Leander Kahney has published a very nice article ,that speculates on the tablet’s features based on recent updates to Mac software. He writes:
“Apple will address what people DO with their netbooks — surf the Web, watch movies, video chat. It will be capable of some light productivity work, like instant messaging, email or writing blog posts. It’ll be lightweight, easily portable, and have long battery life.”
He goes on to explain how recent updates to programs such as iLife, Safari and Quicktime have all been preparing the way for a touchscreen laptop. It’s a convincing argument.
The latest beta of iPhone OS 3.1 contains a configuration for “iProd1,1,” suggesting that the mysterious device is closer to being released. Whether it’s a tablet or some other product is still anyone’s guess. … As most Apple devices are assigned the “1,1″ designation in the first revision, this leads us to believe that there is indeed an unknown product inside of Apple under active development running the iPhone OS.
…
While it’s easy to speculate that this may be the rumored Apple tablet we keep hearing so much about lately. … [Or] it may refer to the camera-equipped iPod nano. … It might even be an iPhone nano. … [But] with a 1,1 moniker the product will see public release soon—perhaps as early as September, when Apple typically unveils new iPods.
Included in all of the recent iPhone SDK updates until now has been the iProd 0,1 device file. 0,1 device files typically stand for prototypes in Apple hardware lingo. As of iPhone SDK 3.1, there is now a new device profile for an iProd 1,1. Theoretically, this means that production “iProd” devices are already being trialled on iPhone OS 3.1.
This could be the tablet or perhaps even an iPod nano with a camera that would run the iPhoneOS (and would therefore have a lot of other goodies). … Frankly, its hard to decide which of these scenarios is more exciting.
