Shanghai plans own Charging Bull or Wall Street bull (Bowling Green Bull) at Bund Financial Square

By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:July 4, 2009

A STATUE of a bull similar to the Wall Street Bull will become a new landmark in Shanghai’s financial hub of the Bund.

The statue, designed as a Chinese ox, is being sculpted now and will be in place in the Bund by the Huangpu River before the end of the Chinese Year of the Ox next February.

The Charging Bull in New York is a 3,200-kilogram bronze sculpture by artist Arturo Di Modica that sits in Bowling Green Park near Wall Street.

The Bund Financial Square, where Shanghai’s bull will be placed, is to the south of Hankou Road and to the north of Guangdong Road.

The oriental version of the bull will add verve to Shanghai’s financial street along the Bund before the end of the Year of the Ox, that is, Feb 14, 2010. The Shanghai version of the Charging Bull will be larger and heavier than the original – all of 6,000 kg against the 3,200-kg Wall Street icon.

Hopefully, the bull will “bring confidence and fortune to the Chinese people in times of economic uncertainty”, said Xin Yaqin, director of Huangpu district’s office of financial services, which manages the financial street.

The China Daily reported on Saturday that Shanghai’s bull will sit on the city’s famous Bund riverfront, across from the Pudong financial district, weighing 6 metric tonnes, compared with Wall Street’s 3.2 tonne beast.

Xin Yaqin, an official in Shanghai’s Huangpu district, said the statue was intended to “bring confidence and fortune to the Chinese people in times of economic uncertainty,” the paper reported.

“Shanghai is different from New York, so we’ll ask the artist to add Chinese characteristics to the sculpture,” Xin said.

The city is home to China’s biggest stock market and the regional base of many multinationals.

China is passing through the year of the ox in the traditional 12-year cycle of animal symbols, and the report said the sculpture will be in place before the next lunar new year starting in February 2010.
