Techcrunch VS Mashable: Traditional or New Media!
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:June 9, 2009
When it comes to Web 2.0/ social media blogging, I’m a huge admirer of both blogs. But it looks Mashable set to overtake rival TechCrunch or at least that’s what Traffic statistics suggest.
Mashable probably does get more traffic because they do a lot of list posts when Techcrunch does none or very few. Whereas Techcrunch has more depth and Mashable has more velocity in their coverage.
Mashable have some good analytical content, also a decent number of list posts that social media sites seem to love. Techcrunch just seems more involved in the tech community and tech events.
TechCrunch Now Number Two Tech Blog As Mashable Surges: How’d Mashable and founder Pete Cashmore do it?
- With Solid content
- Lots of search engine-friendly “how-tos.”
- Readers in the social media industry who share everything
- A dominating Twitter presence.
Besides something called Tweetmeme, Mashable is the top shared site on Twitter, Nicholas Carlson reported.
On Twitter, it’s obvious that Mashable has more followers than TechCrunch.
Mashable: “Founded by Peter Cashmore in 2005, Mashable is a social-networking news blog, reporting on and reviewing the latest developments, applications and features available in or for MySpace, Facebook, Bebo and countless lesser-known social-networking sites and services, with a special emphasis on functionality.”
TechCrunch: “Techcrunch began in 2005 as a blog about dotcom start-ups in Silicon Valley, but has quickly become one of the most influential news websites across the entire technology industry.”

TechCrunch and Mashable are probably the two strongest names in technology news blogging today. Traffic that goes to Techcrunch is extremely tech savvy. Mashable writes about everything happening on the Internet so brand awareness generated on it can be short-lived.
If you remember, When Mashable first started, Pete Cashmore focused solely on writing about MySpace and other social networks and is inspired by Techcrunch, On November 22nd, 2005 Pete Cashmore wrote “Mike Arrington over at TechCrunch has put up an excellent post on Companies I’d like to Profile (but don’t exist). The interesting thing is, I’ve actually tried pursuing two of the ideas that he suggests, so I’m in a pretty good position to comment on how they might pan out in the real world.”
When TechCrunch first started growing, Arrington was writing a smaller number of articles per day, but he made sure that it focused on only web start-ups and it was higher in quality. New startups still dream of being featured on TechCrunch, and I bet they’d still prefer that to Mashable.
