Biomass Gasifier – A gift of Technology to resident of rural areas
By Editorial for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:April 23, 2009
Yes, it is true that Bio Mass Gasifier, is just as gift from development of technology for residents of rural areas facing unavailability of electric supply due to no direct approach of grid supply or insufficient electric supply.
In India, with its keen initiatives for developing new technology TERI , India has developed the Bio Mass Gasifier that will be charged will Bio Mass and then will be used to run engines to generate electrical power , which will now utilized by rural areas in India where the grid supply of electricity is not approached or there is supply continues to be erratic.
As these rural areas are enriched with agrarian economy, biomass – wood, agricultural residues, animal dung, etc., that is available in enormous quantities, this technological innovation is developed to exploit the vast biomass resource and generate power in an environment-friendly and profitable proposition. The power generation systems based on biomass could effectively make up for the absence of grid electricity supply in many remote areas and hence this innovate development of Bio Mass gasifier will serve as golden opportunity for the residents of these rural areas to get advantage of electric power according to their needs.
The gasifier is a reactor that converts biomass into clean gaseous fuel called producer gas (having calorific value of the order of 1000–1200 kilocalories per normalized cubic metre), whereas TERI’s biomass gasifier system is provided with the option of dual-fuel operation so that genset could run on both diesel and producer gas, instead of running only on diesel. The producer gas is fed into the diesel engine to let the engine operate in a dual-fuel mode, thereby reducing diesel consumption by more than 70%. The engine based on biomass gasifier may be used for so many village operations, as to pump water for irrigation, to run oil mills and other domestically using mills, for electric generation for feeding electrical appliances , etc.
It will also be a boon for industries involved in agro processing like tocacco, tea, coffee, cashew, plywood, saw mills, etc to do recycling of their biomass by-products to generate power that can be used for their plant electric supply needs.
Advantages:-
The biomass-based gasifier technology proves an environment-friendly and sustainable solution to the power crisis for rural areas having no direct connectivity with grid supply, and reduces the use of fossil fuels in village applications. The technology is used to recycle bio-waste, which is then utilized to generate energy that can be converted in any form according to requirements, and so It also provides livelihood opportunities to the local population through various activities—biomass generation, processing, and operation of the plant.
