Dell May Bring Smartphones To China Talks With China Mobile
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:April 13, 2009
It looks, Dell is cooperating with China Mobile to launch two smartphones based on China Mobile’s Open Mobile System (OMS) operating system. OMS is itself based on Google’s Android operating system.
Dell might be working on some smart phones with Android, but not for release here in the states. According to a rumor/report posted at JLM Pacific Epoch, China Mobile and Dell plan to jointly release two smartphone models, currently under testing, that are based on the (Android). This comes courtesy of the ever-popular “insider close to” China Mobile.
The project is still in the testing phase, and a specific launch date has not yet been announced. A spokesperson for Dell China did not comment on the news.
Dell’s smartphones were shown around to US carriers recently, but the carriers were unimpressed in the States citing that the phones offered no differentiation in a saturated market. Now, China is wooing dell to bring its 3G-capable smartphone to China Mobile. The original Dell designs shown to US carriers relied on a major operating system like Windows Mobile, which the company was involved with from its PDA days on the Axim line, or Android. However, the models being ported to China Mobile will rely on a proprietary operating system from the Chinese carrier.

This is a pretty big surprise in my opinion. I really expected Dell to release some mediocre smartphones to the US market and fail miserably.
But to hear that they are going to use Android and that they are coming up with some new designs….maybe Dell will actually shake up the smartphone market!
