Social Networks or Networking Socially: Picking a social networking site!
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:January 29, 2009
“When I am not at work, I absolutely refuse to mingle with coworkers. This might sound a bit harsh, but I am not at work to make friends.” What does it means? If it seems workers aren’t talking as much in the office lately, they’re likely communicating through online social networks — using tools such as Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, CEOWorld and Twitter.
Too often the ‘human’ aspect in the workplace is forgotten. There are some people who won’t want to connect with their co-workers at all, but it’s reasonable considering how some employers demean their workforce.
Social Networking can be a very powerful tool. I am a Facebook user, Linked-in and also CEOWorld. Through Linked-in and CEOWorld, which is more optimized for professional use, I’ve managed to find 10 to 12 new clients and connect 7 friends to recruiters that have hired them. In cold hard cash that’s over Euro 2500 in placement bonuses. Says Richard Duigan, chairman of the department of advertising, public relations and retailing at XYZ.. Corp.

About three in ten (35%) adult internet users age 18 and older have a profile on a social networking site like MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn or ceoworld.”
The Pew report defines social network sites as Online social network applications are mainly used for explaining and maintaining personal networks, and most adults, like teens, are using them to connect with people they already know. However, it didn’t include other networking services that enable people to easily self-organize into social networks: Twitter, Ning, Meetup, Delicious, Digg, Slashdot and LiveJournal.
Main Findings on web:
- Personal use of social networks is more prevalent than professional use.
- More than one third of social network users visit their profile daily.
- More than half of adult social network users have more than one profile online.
- One in ten internet users have deleted an online profile.
- Nearly two-thirds of adults restrict access to their online profiles and a similar percentage restrict access to specific content within their profile.
- Half of social network users have profiles on MySpace.

Are you distributing news about your business, pitching one or more products and or services, looking for people feedback on what you or your organization do, all of the above, or something else? Whatever it is you plan to do you need to make sure you can be expressive. I agree – an awful lot of companies think “we have to get something out there” and never really give any significant thought to what they that could do might provide…
