Unemployed? Tips to Use Twitter for Your Job Search | Careers
By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:January 11, 2009
The free, social-networking site (www.twitter.com), founded in 2007, allows users to update their connections on what they’re doing in 140 characters or less. Many employees even hr managers from lead company such as IBM, Google and Apple, recruit in Twitter.
Looking for a job? Lately that can be rough, but besides canvassing the local paper or Craigslist, why not give Twitter a shot?
Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
Who is Using Twitter?
Anyone can use it. I’ve found old friends, local business leaders, politicians and business contacts on Twitter. You’ll find an array of people on Twitter, including CEOs, top-level executives, hiring managers, recruiters and everyone in-between! It’s one-stop shopping for your networking needs. You’ll be surprised to find that stars in your field (mentors) may follow you if you reach out to them!
How Can Twitter get Me a Job?
Twitter can help you find a job by acting as a networking resource. When you are connected to people in your industry you may see posts referring to job openings. You can also get to know people by the short posts they make. It’s a great way to make a more personal connection with someone that could be a lead to a new job. So good luck and happy job hunting!
That includes a very, very short and snappy job hunt.
You can show your background, experience, interests, contact information and link to a Web site showing your work.
You can connect with specific people and companies.
You can promote your Twitter profile on the Web through the Twitbacks application.
TwitBacks.com empowers Twitter members to create custom Twitter backgrounds. Provide personal information, choose a font, upload a logo and a personal photo and choose a template. All of this will then automatically be created into a background that can be used on your Twitter profile page.
You “could target specific brands and then use the @ functionality to wow the recipient with useful knowledge, insight and ideas, making you an ideal candidate for the next vacancy,” the firm wrote.
Create a Twitter strategy.
Your main goal is to find a job, but what are your secondary goals? Specific people to meet, industry news to follow, etc.? Plan to Twitter accordingly.
Don’t follow your friends while signing up. After creating your account, Twitter will suggest that you immediately search through your email contacts to find friends that are already on Twitter. SKIP THIS because you’ll do it later. You want to create an impressive profile before telling anyone that you’re on Twitter.
Prepare to broadcast. Free services like HelloTXT.com let you use your tweets for the status messages on your other social network profiles on Facebook or LinkedIn. This is a good way to get more return on your Twitter investment but make sure you’ll be able to reply when people also respond outside of Twitter.
Follow people who might have jobs to offer. Use Twitter Search to look for people who have twittered relevant job offers in the past and follow them until you can sense if it will happen again. Notice any keywords in common and then search on those too. Also, watch how people reacted to those offers. Search more keywords to find conversations among other industry pros and follow them too.
Twitter from time to time about your job search. Your Twitter friends need to know that you’re job hunting. An occasional reminder is critical to cut through the river of tweets. Ask if you have a job search question. Post updates on your job search tactics to see what people think
Track your dream jobs in real time
First, add your IM device. Now, Twitter supports GTalk, LiveJournal and Jabber. Go to Twitter device, input your instant messenger address. Simply add
Then, you can track. Want a SEO (search engine optimiazation) jobs, type “track SEO jobs” and send to the bot. It will update while there publishes SEO jobs. OK, you can also
Final, Twitter may update frequent, at this time, you need to limit your location, your industy. I recommend you use GTalk for it’s easy to find the history in your GMail(you must setting it in you GTalk at first).
