Rogers Communications Inc. a diversified Canadian communications and media company, Chairman Alan Horn will become interim chief executive officer of Canada’s largest wireless carrier once CEO Ted Rogers dies or steps down, the Globe and Mail reported. A board committee would select a new leader, while Rogers’s son Edward Rogers would run the family’s controlling shareholder position, the newspaper said. The succession plans are outlined in a new autobiography by Rogers, which will be published this week.
Mr. Rogers also laid out his plan to appoint his only son, Edward, as controlling shareholder of the Class A preferred stock owned by the Rogers family. Under Mr. Roger’s current will, Edward would hold this position for the first two years after his father’s death. “For any founding entrepreneur, the challenge is to ensure that wealth, control and management are independent decisions,” Mr. Gandz says. “You try to structure your holdings so wealth goes to family, control in the sense of shareholding of the voting shares stays with whoever you want it to stay with, and management of a public company is appropriately handled by the board.”
“It would be very difficult to beat or find a candidate that would be more qualified than Nadir,” said National Bank Financial analyst Greg MacDonald.
When asked in an interview with the Financial Post this past August if he would like to step into the CEO role, Mr. Mohamed coyly dismissed the question.
“I leave those questions for other folks to worry about,” he said. “We’ve got other stuff to do and more iPhones to sell.” The second and “most important” succession will be who would become the controlling shareholder of the Class A preferred stock owned by the Rogers family.
“Under my current will, my son, Edward, will hold the controlling shareholder position for the first two years after my death,” states the autobiography. As for a new chief executive, current chairman Alan Horn would serve as interim CEO while a selection committee decides on a candidate. Ted has indicated he wants an internal candidate to run the company. “It is my belief that an internal candidate will become CEO because there is a wealth of talent within our senior management team,” Ted states in the book.
