Mike Quigley likely to be new CEO for Alcatel-Lucent SA: Mr. Right?

By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:August 27, 2008

That’s a question we’ve been asking for Alcatel. When and Who? Finally Alcatel-Lucent SA, the world’s largest supplier of fixed-line phone networks search for a chief executive may have reached its terminal, as Reuters reported on Tuesday that Mike Quigley, former chief operating officer of the company, is due to be announced as the successor to Pat Russo.

Quigley left Alcatel as chief operating officer a year ago due to health reasons. Alcatel-Lucent had no immediate comment. The nomination committee is made up of supervisory board members and headed by Daniel Bernard, former chairman of retailer Carrefour.

As Alcatel-Lucent’s CEO, Quigley’s first job would be to finally integrate Lucent and Alcatel’s operations, says Greenholtz. “They have to get this merger done, and I think Mike will make some hard decisions that Serge and Russo couldn’t make,” Greenholtz said.

In 1989, he was appointed Quality Director of Alcatel Australia and in 1993 was named Director of Network Systems, where he was responsible for the company’s Switching, Transmission and Access business. In 1996, Quigley was appointed to General Manager, Alcatel Australia. He has gained significant experience across a broad range of telecommunications technologies and businesses, including assignments in Germany and Belgium.

Quigley graduated from the University of New South Wales with Bachelor degrees in Science (Physics) and Engineering.

Before taking up his current position, Mike Quigley was Alcatel’s President  & Chief Operating Officer, and member of the Alcatel Executive Committee. Prior to that Mike Quigley was both President of Alcatel North America and President Alcatel’s Fixed Communications activities. Mike Quigley started his career in 1971 with ITT Australia on an Engineering scholarship, and after graduation, Mike Quigley spent 10 years in R&D. In the 1980s, he moved into senior positions in Manufacturing and Quality and then into senior roles in Marketing and Sales, before becoming General Manager of Alcatel’s activities in Australia and New Zealand. Mike Quigley is a graduate from the University of New South Wales, Australia, with a degree in Physics and Mathematics and a degree in Electrical Engineering.
