These are the world’s best (and worst) countries for children to grow up in, 2018

Out of the 175 countries analyzed, Singapore has been ranked in the first place, together with Slovenia, for being the best country for children to grow up in, according to a report published by Save the Children. Singapore, which finished in top spot ahead of European countries such as Norway (joint-3rd), Sweden (joint-3rd), Finland (5th), Ireland (joint-6th), and the Netherlands (joint-6th).

Asian countries occupied three of .the top 20 spots, with South Korea ranking eighth and Japan 19th

Singapore’s ranking as the joint best country for children to grow up in reflects its success in “giving every child, regardless of background, the best possible start in life,” Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said.

“Each of these harrowing gauges is considered a ‘childhood ender’,” said PM Lee. “We are fortunate that these grave threats to children are rare or do not exist in Singapore.” Although Singapore frets about social inequality and should never cease striving against it, “this report is a timely reminder that we have not done badly at all”.

“While tackling our social problems, let us not lose our sense of reality and perspective,” he said.

The United Kingdom ranks 22nd internationally, just above Canada. The United States ranks 36th, Russia ranks 37th, Turkey ranks 64th, and India ranks 113rd. The ranking was published in a report of the international charitable organization Save the Children. In total, there are 175 countries on the list.
