10 Habits of Brilliant Students

University Students

Contrary to what people say, everyone has the same capacity to learn and comprehend things. The only difference is that some people are able to access that ability well, while others aren’t. Brilliant students are not born differently, they just adapt to some techniques that help them understand and retain information in an easy manner. This is why they are able to study for longer hours, learn things quickly and score well in tests.

If you want to improve your learning abilities as a student, then here are ten habits that can make you a brilliant student.

  1. Do not lose your mind over bad thoughts

First of all, your focus should be on learning alone. Do not think about the outcome of the tests before you even write them. Losing sleep over bad thoughts and fear will only reduce your concentration and you will not be able to grasp what you are studying. Instead, make learning your aim and consider good scores as an additional benefit. This will also help in reducing the stress of the examinations.

  1. Create realistic goals

Do not set vague or unrealistic goals which you cannot meet. If you can only concentrate for an hour or two, do not try to study for an entire day. Failure to meet the goals often leads to anxiety, which further restricts your ability to learn. Instead, start with small achievable objectives and move towards more difficult goals as you break into the habit of reading for long hours.

  1. Manage your time effectively

Once you know your goals and concentration level, you will be able to manage your time accordingly. Create a timetable and see that you stick to it. However, it is not always easy to study according to the timetable. You must be able to identify when you’re not able to concentrate and need a break. There is no point trying to feed your brain something it can’t process at the moment. Take a small break and refresh yourself. This will help in understanding the concepts better.

  1. Identify your learning style

Everyone has a different pattern and approach to learning. Some people can learn better when they write, while some people read multiple times to retain the information. You must try to identify the practices that help you understand the concepts in a better way.

  1. Reward yourself when you deserve it

Give yourself some motivation to keep pushing through further. Every time you meet a goal, reward yourself with something that makes you feel good. It can be an outing with your friends or watching a movie. But once you are done celebrating your reward, you must be able to regain your focus towards studies.

  1. Know when to ask for help

Understand that there are times when you might not be able to comprehend something on your own. Do not waste your time trying to get through by going over it repeatedly. This will create mental stress and your brain will start to get tired. You should not hesitate in asking for help from friends or teachers.

  1. Prefer monotasking

Avoid doing anything else while you are studying. Juggling between various things will split your concentration and you will not be able to learn properly. If something needs to be done on a priority basis, get it over with before you sit down to study.

  1. Remove distractions

Eliminate anything that can cause a distraction while you are studying. Keep your mobile phone and other gadgets away while you are studying. De-clutter your study table and keep only the required items such as books, notebooks, pens, etc. Too many items on the table can easily distract you from your studies.

  1. Explore beyond the syllabus

A good way to gain a comprehensive knowledge about anything is to read about it from various reliable sources. Do not limit yourself to the textbooks and syllabus. Browse the Internet for more relevant information and attend seminars or sessions to understand the concept properly.

  1. Take care of your health

Following a strict study routine can be very tiring at times. This is why it is important to take proper care of your health. Eat healthy food and avoid food items that induce fatigue and sleep. Regular exercise can help you stay fresh and concentrate on your studies better.
