Looking To Vacation On The Best Island In The World: Top 30 Top Islands List 2014?

Palawan Island Philippines

If you’re planning a family vacation on the world’s best island? Then look no further!   The idyllic island of Palawan in the Philippines has been named the best in the world by readers of a leading travel magazine, Conde Nast Traveler in Readers’ Choice Awards for 2014.

Kiawah Island, South Carolina, came in 2nd, followed by the islands of Maui and Kauai in Hawaii. Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique rounded out the top five. The magazine surveyed 76,659 respondents.

6th through 10th were Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands in Australia, Santorini and Cyclades in Greece, St. John in the US Virgin Islands, Kangaroo Island in Australia, and Big Island in Hawaii.

US travel magazine noted one of Palawan’s most popular tourist destinations, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River in Sabang: “Palawan’s natural wonder is one of the longest underground rivers in the world, traveling five miles through a subterranean cave system. Guided boat tours take visitors down a portion of the waterway, where karsts, natural rock formations created by dissolving limestone, loom in every direction.”

Palawan gained international fame when its Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, said to be the longest navigable underground river in the world, was recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature in 2012.  The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the subterranean river a World Heritage Site in 1999.
